On a night where the 76ers commemorated the anniversary of Allen Iverson's jersey retirement, it was the Miami Heat who provided the answers.
The Sixers split their season series with the Heat, losing by a score of 125-98.
The Heat jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first minute and a half of the game and they did not look back from there. Miami led by 10 points after the first quarter, and extended the lead to 20 by halftime, where the Sixers trailed 64-44.
The Heat's dominance persisted, and their lead hovered around 20 points throughout the second half, save for a burst from the very inexperienced lineup of T.J. McConnell, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, Justin Anderson, Dario Saric, and Richaun Holmes. The group of players who combine for 8 seasons of experience showed the most effort of any of the Sixers lineups in this game and they were able to put the Heat on their heels for the only time all game.
The Sixers turned over the ball 19 times, and the team seemed out of sync for the majority of the game between missed passes and missed assignments.
The Heat shot over 50% from the field and over 40% from three while the Sixers shot 43.5% from the field and 35.3% from three. Between the poor shooting and poor execution on both ends of the floor, the Sixers never gave themselves a chance to get into this game.
Hassan Whiteside, Goran Dragic, and Dion Waiters all scored 15 points playing less than 25 minutes, with Whiteside notching 11 rebounds for the double-double.
The dominating performance by Miami was not limited to their starting lineup, with no starter playing more than 24 minutes.
The Miami bench was as effective as their starters, led by Tyler Johnson's game-high 24 points. James Johnson had 14 of his own and Episcopal High School graduate Wayne Ellington was unconscious from three-point range, going six-for-nine for all 18 of his points.
Ellington's high school teammate Gerald Henderson left the game after playing 11 minutes due to left hip soreness.
T.J. McConnell's competitiveness was on display again, breaking out with eight quick points in the third quarter, and finishing with 14 points, five assists, and five rebounds. It was McConnell's 13th double digit scoring effort of the season, after having 12 such games all of last season.
Robert Covington led the Sixers with 19 points, while Dario Saric, Sergio Rodriguez, and Richaun Holmes also reached double figures.
The Sixers will get a chance to redeem themselves on Friday night when they host the New York Knicks.
