CLEARWATER — Maikel Franco thought he had hit a double.
In the sixth inning of Saturday's rematch between the Phillies and the New York Yankees, he lined a ball into the gap in left-center. It rolled to the outfield wall of Spectrum Field and lodged under the fence. Yankees center fielder Tyler Wade put his hands up, attempting to signify to the umpires that the ball was dead and Franco had a ground-rule double.
Then, Wade decided to pick up the ball. Third-base coach Juan Samuel recognized that the play was not over and sent Franco all the way around to score. Franco had his second home run of the day; this one was of the inside-the-park variety and gave the Phillies a 4-3 lead in the seventh.
Rhys Hoskins went back-to-back with Franco's inside-the-parker to push the lead to 5-3, but the Yankees fought back with a run in the eighth and another in the ninth to tie it.
Hoskins doubled in the ninth and Brock Stassi's single walked it off for the Phillies.

Phillies lefty Adam Morgan and Yankees righty Adam Warren combined to pitch an uneventful first two innings before the real action began in the third. Gleyber Torres, named MVP of the Arizona Fall League in 2016 and acquired by the Yankees in the Aroldis Chapman deal with the Cubs, hit his first of two doubles in the game. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Cesar Ramos fastball in the dirt that sailed by Cameron Rupp.
The Phillies answered in the bottom of the frame after a critical error by Yankees' third baseman Miguel Andújar. Rupp singled to right, then Aaron Altherr chopped a ball to third which Andújar fielded, then threw wildly to first to put runners on second and third. César Hernández grounded out, scoring Rupp.
In the fourth, Franco crushed a low pitch deep into the left-field stands to put the Phils ahead, 2-1.
Former No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel pitched the fifth and sixth, giving Phillies fans glimpses of both the promise and the concern associated with the former top prospect. He struck out three batters in two innings, but uncorked a wild pitch to score Torres and Andújar in the fifth after the former's second double put runners on second and third. Appel's fastball hit the dirt well in front of home plate, connected with Rupp's shin guard, and rolled steadily up the first-base line as both runners scored to put the Yankees up 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Scott Kingery singled, continuing a nice spring for the second-base prospect. Andrew Pullin moved him to third with a single of his own before Odubel Herrera's double play brought home Kingery. Franco's double-turned-home run, and Hoskins' deep jack to center, followed as the Phillies tacked on three runs in the inning.
Edubray Ramos ran into a bit of trouble in the eighth. Catcher Bryan Holaday caught Pete Kozma stealing second, but Wade walked, a groundout moved him to second, and Kellin Deglan's single brought him home to make it 5-4.
With two outs in the ninth, Phillies third baseman Hector Gómez watched Ji-Man Choi's high pop-up drop in fair territory behind the bag, letting Choi reach second. Donovan Solano drove in Choi with a single to tie the game.
Hoskins doubled in the bottom of the ninth, and pinch-runner Roman Quinn replaced him. Quinn beat out an offline throw from center field on Stassi's single to walk it off for the Phillies.
The Phillies deviate slightly from their normal 1:05 p.m. start time on Sunday, taking on the Toronto Blue Jays at 1:07 in Dunedin. Right-hander Jeremy Hellickson will take on righty Mat Latos.
