PHILADELPHIA — Lately, the Flyers' new trend is that it'll take a while for their offense to get going. They may not score right away, but they'll find the net either late in the second period or any point in the third.
As the third stanza of their Saturday matinee matchup with Los Angeles progressed, they still weren't able to find twine. They weren't able to generate a lot of quality chances on Peter Budaj, though luckily, they weren't allowing goals either.
Just 2:35 into the overtime period, though, their luck ran out. Jeff Carter nailed the game-winning goal on a one-timer from Anze Kopitar along the goal line to eke out a 1-0 victory. Michal Neuvirth, who had made a number of big saves to get the Flyers a point, wasn't able to do anything about it.
The first period started off innocuously for the Orange and Black. They put a respectable nine shots on goal, but didn't even match that over the next two periods — scoring four in each stanza, but none in overtime. You can't score if you don't find the net, right?
Though they had chances, particularly on a pair of power plays (one of which was abbreviated) and a Sean Couturier breakaway in the second that hit the post, Budaj's work was essentially cut out for him. He didn't face much in the way of rebound shots, and almost looked as if he was playing on easy mode in a video game.
Neuvirth, on the other end, earned his money between the Flyers' pipes with a 27-save effort. He was there to counter the Kings' big chances, including sprawling stops on Dustin Brown in the second and Tanner Pearson in the third. It just so happened that Carter caught him when he was hung out to dry, though.
For the Flyers, it's their sixth time being shut out this season. It's also their first time being blanked by the Kings since Feb. 13, 2011 — a game that saw Wayne Simmonds set up Drew Doughty's game-winning goal.
The Orange and Black return to the ice Monday, continuing their homestand against St. Louis.
Notes: Travis Konecny and Shayne Gostisbehere were healthy scratches for the second-consecutive game, while Michael Del Zotto was scratched as well. … The Flyers' season series with the Kings ends, and they went 1-0-1 against them. … Budaj's win was the 150th of his NHL career. … The Orange and Black have no dropped five of their last six home matchups with the Kings, dating back to the 2010-11 season.
