Flyers torched in second, fall 4-1 to Sabres

Though the Flyers could not find twine early on, they were doing a steady job establishing pressure. They raced out to a 13-8 shots advantage, and fired a few shots that made Anders Nilsson earn his keep.

They completely fell off the rails once the second period started, though, as the Buffalo Sabres potted three goals over the course of the period en route to a convincing 4-1 win. For the fifth time in the past eight games, the Flyers couldn't score any more than two goals.

Sam Reinhart gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead early in the second, cashing in on a power play as Brayden Schenn sat for a hooking minor. Once the Sabres scored, it was as if the ice was completely tilted in their favor from there.

That momentum carried over for the next several minutes, and William Carrier was able to capitalize, as he headed to the net to bury a rebound from a Taylor Fedun shot. Carrier's goal snapped a 17-game scoreless drought, and was the second of the season for the 22-year-old rookie.

Evander Kane padded the lead before the period could end, burying a blocked shot in the slot with just 8.9 seconds left on the clock, netting his sixth career goal against the Orange and Black. The Sabres entered the dressing room with a fresh 3-0 lead, and would do their damndest to stay disciplined and limit the Flyers' opportunities as much as possible.

It took until the dying minutes of the third period for the Flyers to score, and as they pulled Steve Mason for a two-man advantage, Schenn scored on a power play with 2:07 on the clock — finally beating Nilsson in garbage time, for lack of a better term. Marcus Foligno padded the lead just before the game could end, though, sending the puck into the empty Flyers net with 3.3 seconds left.

Mason made 23 saves for the Orange and Black, while Nilsson stood tall with 39 stops. Both teams capitalized on one of two power-play chances.

The Flyers next take the ice Thursday, for a home matchup against the Vancouver Canucks.
