In 2010, the San Francisco Giants prevented Jimmy Rollins and the Philadelphia Phillies from appearing in their third consecutive World Series, and possibly winning their second World Series title in a three-year span. Nearly seven seasons later, Rollins, now 38, hopes those same Giants can help him to capture his second World Series.
Speaking to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Rollins says that seeing some of his former teammates win a second World Series title has kept him hungry to again experience the feeling of winning a championship:
"I do want to win again. It has a lot to do with that. I always jokingly say to guys I played with and went on and got that second ring — Shane (Victorino), Pat Burrell, Hunter Pence … me, Chase (Utley) and Ryan (Howard) are left with one. It’s like, “You know what? I need to get somewhere where I can help win another championship. That’s my main goal.”
Rollins' first task is to make the San Francisco Giants out of Spring Training after signing a minor league deal with the club earlier this month. Given that Brandon Crawford is a lock to start at shortstop, Rollins is vying to be a utility man for the Giants. To do so, he will have to prove he's capable of playing second base, third base and potentially left field, while beating out at least one of Conor Gillaspie, Ehire Adrianza and Eduardo Nunez.
If Rollins is able to make the Giants, a path to a World Series exists, though it is a crowded one. The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Giants out for the National League West title a season ago, the National League Central features three potential playoff teams — including the World Series champion Chicago Cubs — and the Washington Nationals and New York Mets both could make playoff runs from the National League East. The Giants are the most successful team in the league this decade, but winning a fourth World Series title this decade may prove to be a tall task.
