In one of the more intense 1-1 games in team history, the Philadelphia Flyers would come back to tie the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Spectrum.
The significance of the game was huge. The Flyers would salvage the tie and extend their streak of 28 games without a loss. That would tie the existing record, held by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1977-78 season.
The Penguins would take the lead halfway through the first period on a power play goal by Ron Stackhouse that would get by Pete Peeters at 11:35. That lone goal would hold up for another 44 minutes of play as the Flyers were having a tough time beating Pittsburgh netminder Greg Millen.
When the Penguins’ Bob Stewart was whistled for hooking at 4:39 of the third period, it was the golden opportunity the Flyers needed to tie the game.
On that power play, the Flyers Behn Wilson deflected a Dennis Ververgaert pass to beat Millen at 15:52 and the Flyers knotted the game at one.
While outshooting the Penguins 35-23 for the game, the Flyers felt a sense of relief in tying the game and tying the record. Balloons fell from above the Spectrum rafters, along with paper, reading “You Were There” in celebration.
I wonder how many of the Flyers faithful still have those items tucked away as memorabilia.
