With the Phillies adding left-fielder Howie Kendrick and locking up center fielder Odubel Herrera to a five-year contract, the Phillies could appear to be done making major moves. However, that may not totally be the case. Without a left-handed bat on the roster who can provide some power, there may be one more move in the works.
Phillies assistant general manager Scott Proefrock joined the Sports Bash with Mike Gill on Friday afternoon, and discussed the Herrera signing. But, he also indicated that the club could be adding an additional starter:
"There's still the possibility we another bat to the lineup. I think Tommy Joseph did a fine job for us last year…he's going to get regular playing time. But there may be an opportunity for a left-handed bat to come in and play some first base and play some corner outfield to give us a little bit more left-handed platoon opportunities with the club and still be able to provide the at bats for the young players to show whether they are part of the future or not."
"We're still looking for probably for somebody from the left side who can play the corner outfield and first base."
Who might fit that bill?
Well, one name I have mentioned before is former Phillie Brandon Moss. After being buried behind Ryan Howard and losing out to John Bowker down the 2011 season stretch run, Moss became an All-Star with the Oakland Athletics. In 2016, Moss hit 28 home runs.
Moss would not require a long-term commitment and could be trade bait down the stretch for a contending team.
