All posts by Roland ArumMontana sports betting laws can be confusing in terms of what’s off-limits and what’s fair game. Rules vary widely from retail to online sports betting, esports betting, and horse racing betting. Online sports betting in Montana, for instance, is legal but restricted. Bettors can use the state-regulated SportsBet Montana app to browse wagers from home but must be physically present at a licensed retail location or betting terminal to place bets.
Thankfully, there is a workaround for this—offshore sportsbooks. But not every platform is worth your time. Hence, SportsTalkPhilly’s betting experts have tested, ranked, and reviewed dozens of MT sportsbooks, outlining the top ten sites and assessing security, bonuses, promotions, contests, and payment options. We also cover what’s legal vs. illegal in Montana, and the most popular sports/teams to wager on in the state are also up for discussion.

The Best Montana Online Sports Betting Sites Reviewed
Now, let’s cast the spotlight on the cream of the crop. These five offshore sportsbooks stand tall above the rest in regards to bonuses, payout processing times, betting odds, betting markets, and contests. Here’s how.
1. BetOnline – Best Overall MT Sportsbook for [Cur_Month], [Cur_Year]
BetOnline is the ultimate app for Montana bettors who want more than just the basics. The Panama-licensed sportsbook offers betting odds across 25 sports markets, including Montana favorites like the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, NCAAB, and NCAAF. Popular global sports like soccer, tennis, and Formula 1 betting and niche markets like politics betting and entertainment also get extensive coverage.
BetOnline’s welcome bonus of $250 in free bets, claimable using BetOnline promo codes, isn’t the most attractive, but numerous competitive ongoing bonuses compensate for that. With constant promotions and contests for returning players, BetOnline is here for the long haul, not just the signup hype. Here, you can find crypto-exclusive promos, reloads, rebates, odds boosts, VIP benefits, and free-entry sports-specific contests (Survivor, UFC Prop Challenge, etc.).
Beyond the bonuses, BetOnline delivers with a re-bet functionality and early betting lines. It is one of the sharpest sportsbooks with outright betting lines on events like the Super Bowl a year before the event. For regular season games, you can find a variety of bet types, too, including moneyline, over/under (Totals) point spreads, prop bets, parlays, if bets, and teasers. Members can also live-stream select major league games.

On BetUS TV, experts review past games, dissect upcoming ones, and discuss their weekly betting picks to help bettors make more informed decisions.
On top of this stats-backed analysis is a juicy welcome bonus to boost new users’ payroll. While many sportsbooks reward users for their initial deposit alone, BetUS matches the first three deposits up to $2,000 ($625 for the casino). A user may also qualify for its refer-a-friend bonus of 300% up to $6,000 if a friend registers through their refer link. These rewards can be claimed by entering BetUS promo codes.
With a 30-plus-year history, the MT sportsbook offers betting odds on 20+ sports markets. It also has a dedicated racebook for horse racing betting, where you can find betting lines on 150+ tracks worldwide, including Hong Kong, Dubai, Australia, and England.

It offers 30+ lines on the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers games, including both teams to score, halftime result, over/under(Totals), the first player to score, spreads, moneyline, etc. BetOnline, in comparison, offers 15+ lines on MLS games. You’ll also find many outright betting lines on major tournaments like the World Cup.
The multiple betting options are an advantage, but even better are its existing customer offers like enhanced odds and bet insurance. Everygame’s 2024/25 soccer betting parlay insurance involves refunding a part of the bettor’s stake should they lose their parlay by one leg, and a parlay raffle exists when one leg of your 5+-leg parlay fails.
Everygame offers two welcome bonuses – one for fiat and another for crypto deposits. Snag these welcome bonuses plus some of its other rewards with Everygame promo codes. Our featured Montana sports betting sites came out tops upon a review of first-hand testing and evaluation of hundreds of Montana online sports betting sites based on the following criteria:
Range of BetsOur recommended MT sportsbooks offer diverse bets, ranging from simple wagers like spreads, totals parlays, and teasers to exotic wagers like team/player props, futures, if best, exacta, trifecta, and superfecta.
Choice of EventsThe number of sporting events they offered was also considered. Our MT sports betting sites provide betting lines on 15 to 30 sports betting markets, including U.S. favorites like NBA, NHL, NFL, and MLB, international attractions such as cycling, F1, swimming, and tennis, and niche sports like snooker, esports, and darts. Some, like TG Casino, provide even more—40 sports betting markets.
Bonuses & PromotionsMost betting sites onboard new users with welcome bonuses. But the real question is if the terms of these bonuses are fair. Bonuses with very high deposit and wagering limits can be tricky to cash out and are of very little use to the bettor. Reviewing dozens of sportsbook bonuses, we found that the sportsbooks on our list offer the best overall value. They also provided ongoing bonuses like reloads, rebates, and odds boosts to returning bettors.
Safety & SecurityPlayers want to know that their personal and financial information is kept secure when playing online. Therefore, top sportsbooks interested in giving users the best betting experience use advanced encryption technologies like 128—or 256-bit SSL to protect users’ data. They are also typically licensed by the top gaming boards from Malta, Curacao, Panama, Anjouan, or Mwali, which hold them to the highest security standards.
Payment MethodsOur sports betting experts ranked the reviewed websites based on the number and convenience of their deposit and withdrawal payment options. Other factors considered were the transaction fees and deposit and withdrawal processing times.
Customer SupportGood customer support is always handy when issues with deposits and withdrawals arise; thus, it is non-negotiable. We handpicked websites with round-the-clock customer support and multiple contact options, including phone, email, and live chat. We also reached out to the customer support teams to see first-hand how quick their response time is and how helpful they may be in helping users resolve their pain points.
Is Sports Betting Legal in Montana?
Yes, it is. Montana is one of the first U.S. states to legalize sports betting following the Supreme Court’s repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018. Governor Steve Bullock signed HB 275 into law in 2019, legalizing sports betting in the state and establishing a framework for its regulation. This law granted the Montana Lottery exclusive authority to operate retail and online sports betting.
Another sports betting bill, SB 330, introduced by G. Hertz, proposed allowing outside operators to offer betting services in the state as well. However, Governor Bullock opted not to endorse this bill, allowing Montana Lottery to maintain its monopoly over the sports betting market.
Although legal, sports bettors can only place wagers at designated kiosks or via the Montana SportsBet app at licensed Montana sports betting locations/terminals. The state, home to only about 1.1 million people, has hundreds of certified, in-person sportsbook locations, which include casinos, restaurants, hotels, bars, and even convenience stores. Montana sports betting laws allow for more retail sportsbooks than nearly all states in the US. Therefore, there is probably a nearby designated kiosk wherever you reside in the state.
Sadly, there is a cap on betting amounts. In-play bettors are limited to $250 wagers, while you can bet up to $1,000 when you do so online instead. Unlike many other states, there are no restrictions on college betting. In 2024, the overseeing body, Montana Lottery, declined an NCAA request to ban prop bets on college players.
Although there are no explicit prohibitions on college betting, you are less likely to find prop betting odds on Montana’s primary college teams—the University of Montana and Montana State—as they play at the second-tier FCS level, where there are higher integrity risks due to limited transparency and media scrutiny compared to the FBS.
Is DFS Legal in Montana?
Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) isn’t legal in Montana. The Treasure State is one of five (5) U.S. states where internet-based fantasy sports games are deemed illegal. The state made its position clear in MCA 23-5-802 where it states that:
“It is lawful to conduct or participate in a fantasy sports league, including a fantasy sports league that is operated under a pari mutuel system of wagering regulated under Title 23, Chapter 4. It is unlawful to wager on a fantasy sports league by telephone or by the internet.”
In other words, the law allows the formation of a fantasy sports league in person. However, calling in picks or participating in contests via DFS operators is prohibited.
Several bills have been proposed over the years to legalize DFS, but none have been passed. Notable mentions are HB 181, SB 25, and most recently, HB 265.
HB 181 proposed that the Montana Department of Justice’s Gambling Control Division regulate major DFS operators’ activities and redefine DFS as a game of skill rather than gambling. However, lawmakers concerned about the spread of a gambling endemic opposed this.
SB 25 also proposed a licensing and regulatory system for DFS operators but faced considerable opposition. So did HB 265, which aimed to legalize DFS and included provisions for registration, operator licensing fees, and player protection through fair play standards and rules transparency.
Montana Legal Sports Betting – Latest Legislation News
The Montana Lottery has overseen the rapid expansion of hundreds of retail locations state-wide since sports betting became legal and went live in 2019. However, online sports betting, offered exclusively by the government-run board, is still largely restricted and looks set to remain so.
Here is a timeline of how sports betting has shaped up in Montana over the years.
- February 12, 2024 – Silver Wolf Casino is announced as the first casino in the state to offer retail sports betting.
- March 25, 2021 – HB 193 is enacted, removing restrictions on bets and winnings, specifically sports tabs and pools.
- March 11, 2020 – The Montana Lottery rolls out Sports et Montana betting kiosks across the state.
- March 9, 2020 – Montana Lottery releases SportsBet Montana.
- May 3, 2019 – Governor Bullock sanctions HB 725, legalizing sports betting in the state.
- March 22, 2019 – HB 725, a bill to legalize sports betting through the Montana Lottery, is introduced to the House.
- May 14, 2018 – The Supreme Court overturns PASPA giving states autonomy to decide their sports betting laws.

Welcome Bonuses
A standard welcome bonus sees the sportsbook match your deposit up to a certain amount. A classic example is MyBookie’s 10% (of initial deposit) up to $200 cash bonus. However, other promotions are available, including BetOnline’s $250 free bets bonus.
Reloads
Cash reloads, such as the 50% promotion at MyBookie, match a percentage of other deposits following the initial one. Consider it a reward for continuous play and keeping the action going.
Rebates
When a sportsbook promises a rebate, it offers to return a percentage of your losses over a period. Therefore, a 10% weekly rebate means you will get $10 back in cash bonuses or free bets weekly for every $100 bet loss.
No-sweat bets
These bets allow you to place bets without losing your initial wager. The sportsbook offering the promotion refunds your wager if the bet loses.

Montana has no professional sports teams. At just 1.1 million people strong, the state does not have the market size or fan base to attract professional NBA, NFL, MLB, or NHL teams. However, many of its residents follow these sports and enthusiastically support and bet on nearby franchises. Let’s look at some of the teams and sports Montanans love to wager on.
NFLNFL games are the most popular sports betting option in most U.S. states, including Montana. Most Treasure Staters back the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos.
The Seahawks, led by stars like Russell Wilson (Mr. Unlimited), Malcolm Smith, and Richard Sherman, won their first Super Bowl in 2014, beating close rivals Denver Broncos 43-8. The Broncos have been spectacular, too, with eight AFC and three Super Bowl Championships.
After three games in the 2024-25 season, the Seahawks sit comfortably atop the NFC West standings with a 100% record. Could they make the playoffs this time? Seahawks and Broncos backers can get the most competitive betting odds on their favorite teams on BetOnline. This NFL betting site provides early lines on the Super Bowl, multiple prop betting lines, and NFL-themed promotions and contests.
MLBRegarding the MLB, Montanans appear to be split between allegiances to the Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies. Some of the state’s sports fans also follow the Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and Arizona Diamondbacks, who have had long-standing partnerships with minor league teams.
The Mariners had a solid start to the 2024-25 season but will miss the postseason for the second time.
MyBookie offers competitive betting odds on the Mariners and Rockies. It is one of the best sites for MLB betting because of its prop builder and the number of bet options on games—more than many other Montana sportsbooks.
NBAThe NBA is also a popular attraction for Montana sports fans. Many back the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers. The Jazz, who haven’t played postseason hoop since the 2021-22 season, have been subpar for a few seasons and may not be the most attractive team to bet on currently.
Antony Davis’ Los Angeles Lakers have been comparatively better, making the playoffs in the ’23 and ’24 seasons. With his shot-blocking and defensive presence, The Brow, who locked down the third spot in defensive stats leaders for the 2023-24 season (12.6RPG), could be a stand-out option for anyone looking to bet on defense.
Although you can find NBA betting lines on all of our recommended NBA sportsbooks, Bovada has the most comprehensive coverage. It has a dedicated NBA Futures page where you can find exciting team futures markets and a mobile-optimized live betting suite with unique NBA markets and dynamic graphical displays.
NHLMontana has a solid outdoor sports culture, including a strong interest in amateur and pro hockey. With no NHL team, many residents of Northwestern State cheer nearby teams like the Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche. The Las Vegas Knights, quite surprisingly, have a solid fanbase in the state despite being over 700 miles away, depending on where you reside.
Why not? The Vegas Knights are among the top five things to happen to Vegas. They did terrific in their debut season and are the most recent Western Conference team to hoist the Stanley Cup, achieving this as recently as 2023.
Because of its lucrative welcome bonus, regular NHL specials, and BetUS TV, where experts discuss their weekly NHL betting picks, BetUS is well-known in gambling communities as one of the best NHL betting sites on the market.
NCAAFAs with the NFL, college football has a huge following in Montana, if not more, as the state has two homegrown teams – the Montana State Bobcats and Montana Grizzlies.
In 2023, the Grizzlies put together one of the most memorable seasons in program history with a magical run to the FCS national championship despite being ranked 6th in the Big Sky coaches’ preseason poll. They are the winningest FCS team of the 21st century, have made it to the playoffs 27 times, an FCS record, and are considered a favorite for this year’s Championship.
Are you looking to bet on the Grizzly’s Championship chances? SportsBetting.ag may be the best place for NCAAF betting. It provides early lines on futures like the FCS and Big Sky Championships. It also features free regular NCAAF betting contests, giving you a risk-free chance at earning even more.
NCAABThe University of Montana Grizzlies and Montana State University Bobcats also have solid NCAAB teams. The two local powerhouses reinforced their rivalry in the 2023-24 Big Sky Championship final, one of the most intense games in the Championship’s history.
The Grizzlies started on the front foot, leading 49-38 early in the second half before a dramatic comeback led by Eddie Turner III and Robert Ford III turned the game on its head. The Bobcats ultimately won, making it their third Big Sky Championship title on the bounce.
Both teams are favorites once again for the Big Sky Championship, and there are many players and prop betting options for bettors to explore. BetOnline is our top pick for NCAAB betting. The Panama-licensed sportsbook offers numerous betting lines on the NCAAB and NCAAW, ranging from player props to if-bets, teasers, and everything in between. It also features Player Prop Pick’Em, Sweet 16 Bracket, and Bracket Madness contests.
SoccerSoccer isn’t the biggest in Montana, but many of the state’s residents support MLS teams, Seattle Sounders and the Portland Timbers.
The former are consistent playoff contenders and have a solid defensive record, conceding the fewest goals (32) in the 2023-24 season (Western Conference). The Timbers, on the other hand, are one of the conference’s worst teams on defense, conceding as many as 58 goals, the second-most in the same season.
Everygame offers the best soccer betting. The MT sports betting app has deep soccer betting markets, offering up to 30+ lines on the Sounders and Timbers games, ranging from spreads to props on BTTS, halftime results, and correct scores. Three separate parlay promotions are also available.
Horse RacingHorse racing is a niche sport in the Northwestern state, with a few notable race tracks offering live races and betting opportunities. Notable tracks include Montana ExpoPark and Miles City Bucking Horse Sale racing tracks.
BUSR is the place to be if you want to bet on horse races worldwide instead. The MT sportsbook has a dedicated racebook section where you can place wagers and follow ongoing races across the country and the world. A 150% welcome cash bonus and a 10% daily rebate for horse racing betting is also available.
Montana Sports Betting Apps & Mobile Wagering
Online sports betting, already legal in 30+ U.S. states, is projected to reach a market volume of $23.8 million in 2029. This figure is primarily driven by the increase in mobile betting apps, which has made sports betting more accessible to Americans. These apps, available on Android and iPhone, give bettors access to betting markets on the go.
Although none of our featured Montana sports betting sites offer downloadable apps, their websites are mobile-optimized. Each provides a user-friendly interface and fast loading times. They also match these downloadable apps in terms of convenience, as users can receive notifications on bets when the site is bookmarked, keeping them updated in real-time.

Sports Betting in Montana’s Neighboring States
Sports bettors in MT cannot place wagers online via the SportsBet MT app unless they are within touching distance of a betting terminal. While these terminals are available in many public spaces and thus within reach for most people, this can be a little frustrating for avid bettors. None more so than residents who want to place wagers on live games where betting lines are quickly adjusted in line with the action.
How many of MT’s neighbors go by the same playbook, if any? Do these states permit sports betting at all, and how restrictive or welcoming are their sports betting laws? Let’s find out.
Wyoming
Wyoming sports betting, including daily fantasy sports, became legal in 2021 when Governor Mark Gordon signed HB 0133 into law. Unlike Montana, players can place bets through major sports betting apps like Caesars, FanDuel, BetMGM, and DraftKings. Wyoming also has a retail sportsbook—the Buffalo Sportsbook at the WindRiver Hotel and Casino in Riverton. The legal sports betting age in Wyoming is 18.
Idaho
Though Idaho has seven tribal casinos and gaming locations that can potentially offer retail sports betting, it has yet to legalize sports betting. Even since the abolishment of PASPA, there have been no propositions for pro-sports betting bills in MT. With no push at the legislative level, it is nearly impossible to estimate when, if ever, legal Montana sports betting becomes a reality.
North Dakota
Sports betting is legal in North Dakota but only via tribal compacts. Bettors can only place wagers at retail sportsbooks, as online sports betting isn’t legal in the state. The closest the state ever came to legalizing online sports betting was in 2021, when there were calls to put it up for votes on the November 22 ballot. However, pushbacks from North Dakota lawmakers ensured this never saw the light of the day.
South Dakota
As with Montana, sports betting became legal in South Dakota, albeit in a limited context. Residents can place online wagers on their favorite teams/players, but only if they are placed while at a Deadwood casino. The state’s betting laws prohibit betting on individual college athletes and high school, minor league, in-state colleges, and university games.
Nebraska
Nebraska sports betting became legal in 2021. However, Nebraskans can only place bets at retail locations. These include Grand Island Casino Resort, Caesar’s Sportsbook at Harrah’s Colombus, and WarHorse Casino. Online sports betting could, however, become legal in the state soon: a constitutional amendment to allow voting on online sports betting was introduced in the legislature on August 16, 2024.
Is Any Form of Gambling Legal in Montana?
Sports betting is legal but limited in Montana. Thankfully, it is not the only gambling option available in the state. Other forms of legal gambling in Montana include casino gambling and horse betting.
Casino: Montana has over 100 casino locations around the state. But, these casinos are restricted from offering table or house-banked card games. True slot machines are unavailable under the Montana Annotated Code, and games like blackjack or craps are not legally available either.
Gamblers are confined to video poker, video keno, and other slot-like machines allowed by the Annotated Code. They also have options like raffle, bingo, sports pools, and live poker if the casino offers it. In Montana, casinos are operated by both private companies and federally recognized tribal groups.
Horse racing: This is a popular option in the Big Sky Country. You can bet on horse races in Montana through online horse betting sites like Caesars Racebook and FanDuel Racing or at the Great Falls Turf Club and Miles City Bucking Horse Sale tracks.
