What is the NBA Draft?
The NBA Draft, which dates back to 1947, is an annual event where the 30 NBA teams pick new players. It usually takes place in late June and consists of two rounds.
Most of the players drafted come from US college basketball, but the list also includes international players and those from the G League. To be eligible for the draft, players must be at least 19 years old and, for college players, one year out of high school.
The Draft Lottery decides the order of the first 14 picks, which are given to the teams that failed to reach the NBA playoffs in the previous season. The lottery is weighted, meaning teams with worse records have the best chances of securing a higher pick. That said, there’s still a chance for teams with better records to move up in the order.
The remaining 16 picks are then assigned to the teams that made the previous playoffs in reverse order of their win-loss record during the regular season. This means that the team with the best record picks last.
NBA teams can trade picks and players during the draft. They have five minutes to make their pick in the first round and two minutes in the second round. There are 60 picks in total over the two rounds. However, the 2022, 2023, and 2024 editions had 58 picks overall.
Timeline of Significant Events & Trades
Find out the most memorable events and notable trades in the history of the NBA Draft.
- 2021: Williamson becomes the fourth youngest NBA player selected in an All-Star game.
- 2019: Zion Williamson is the first overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans.
- 2011: The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Kyrie Irving first overall. The point guard later won the NBA Championship with the Cavaliers in 2016.
- 2003: Cleveland Cavaliers select LeBron James as the year’s first overall pick. Further picks this year included future stars like Dwayne Wade (5th pick), Carmelo Anthony (3rd pick), and Chris Bosh (4th pick).
- 1998: The Milwaukee Bucks select Dirk Nowitzki as the 9th pick and trade him to the Dallas Mavericks. He later becomes one of the greatest power forwards and European players of all time.
- 1996: Another prominent draft in NBA history. It produced stars like Kobe Bryant (13th pick), Allen Iverson (1st pick), Ray Allen (5th pick), and Steve Nash (15th pick).
- 1985: The first NBA Draft Lottery takes place, with the New York Knicks winning and picking the now-legendary Patrick Ewing.
- 1984: One of the most famous drafts involving Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon (1st pick), Michael Jordan (3rd pick), Charles Barkley (5th pick), and John Stockton (16th pick).
- 1947: The inaugural NBA Draft takes place, and Clifton McNeely becomes the first player ever selected.
When is the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery
The 2024 NBA Draft Lottery was held in Chicago on May 12, 2024. The event usually takes place around mid-May each year. So, we expect the 2025 edition to be around the mid-point of May in 2025. The exact date will be announced closer to the NBA Draft.
How Many Rounds are there in the NBA Draft in 2024?
Like in recent years, the 2024 NBA Draft will consist of two rounds over two nights. This is the first time the draft will be held on more than one night since it was reduced to two rounds in 1989.
When is the 2024 NBA Draft?
The 2024 NBA Draft will take place in New York in June. The first round takes place on June 26, 2024, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, with the second round all set for June 27 at ESPN’s Seaport District Studios in Manhattan.

The legality of NBA Draft betting varies from state to state. In 2018, the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), giving individual US states the autonomy to legalize sports betting.
As of 2024, more than 30 US states have legalized wagering on sports, including NBA Draft betting. While states like Delaware, New York, and Florida allow residents to bet online and in person on the NBA Draft, others such as Mississippi and Nebraska permit wagering at retail sportsbooks only. Georgia, Hawaii, and 12 other states don’t allow NBA Draft betting in any form.
If your state has yet to regulate sports wagering, you can bet legally and safely online using our featured offshore sportsbooks. These sites are available to all US residents, who can sign up and bet without restrictions or fear of prosecution. The platforms offer bigger bonuses and more betting markets than most state-regulated sites.

Before betting on the NBA Draft, you should understand how the odds work. NBA Draft betting odds are a visual representation of the chances of an outcome happening and the potential payout for your bet.
Positive (+) odds indicate that a sportsbook less fancies an outcome and will yield higher payouts if your luck is in. On the other hand, negative lines (-) mean an outcome is more favored and will give lower payouts for a successful bet. Also, the higher the value of the favorable odds for an outcome, the less likely the sportsbook fancies it to happen.
For example, consider BetOnline’s odds for the No. 1 Overall Pick NBA 2024 Draft, as shown above. With -130, Zacharrie Risacher of the LNB Pro A is the sportsbook’s favorite for the first overall pick. If you wager $130 on the 19-year-old and he is the first overall pick, you win a $100 profit.
Meanwhile, Bronny James has +30000 odds, meaning BetOnline doesn’t believe the former USC point guard will be the first overall pick. However, if you bet $100 on LeBron James’s son, and he manages to defy the odds (very unlikely, if not impossible), you’ll receive a whopping $30,000 profit.
Popular NBA Draft Betting Lines
Let’s look at the NBA Draft betting lines you can explore when wagering at our featured sports betting apps.
No. 1 Overall Pick
This is the most popular line at the best NBA Draft betting sites. It simply involves predicting which player will be selected first on draft night.
No. 2 – No. 5 Overall Pick
Similar to the No. 1 Overall Pick, you’re betting on which players will be selected: second, third, fourth, and fifth.
Player Draft Position (Over/Under)
Here, you’re wagering on whether a player will come off the board higher or lower than a specified position.
First Four Picks in Order
This is similar to the superfecta bet in horse racing. It involves picking the exact order of the first four picks in the NBA Draft.
Props/Specials
In NBA Draft betting, props refer to more unique, specific, and exciting betting lines than the regular markets. Here are a few examples:
- Bronny James Drafted
- Total Trades in Top 10 Picks
- Total Trades in Top 5 Picks
- Will the Number 1 Overall Pick be Traded?
- To Be Drafted in Top 5

NBA Draft betting offers opportunities to wager on draft selections and earn sizeable profits. The following tips can increase your chances of winning when wagering on the NBA Draft.
1. Check Player Performance
Solid knowledge of the players’ performance is essential when making NBA Draft bet picks. To gauge their ability, you can look up each basketballer’s point per game, rebounds, assists, and shooting percentages. Also, ensure you check the player’s work ethic, physical qualities, and growth potential.
You can view information about player performance at ESPN or Sports Reference.
2. Consider Team Needs
NBA teams tend to pick players who play in positions where they need reinforcements. Hence, it’s a good idea to check each team’s recent trades, free agency moves, injuries, and weak areas to predict which players they are most likely to draft.
For example, if a team like the Atlanta Hawks, holding the number 1 pick, is known to be without a recognized small forward, they may target a top prospect like Zaccharie Risacher at the 2024 NBA Draft. You can research all the NBA teams at Basketball Reference.
3. Take Advantage of Mock Drafts
While we don’t advise solely relying on mock drafts when betting on the NBA Draft, they can be helpful as a reference. Comparing multiple drafts from the best experts in the game can help inform winning betting selections.
For example, if several top and reputable mock drafts put a player within the top five, there’s a strong chance that the player will come off the board early.
4. Stay Up-to-Date on Injuries & Off-Court Issues
Injuries and off-court problems can affect players’ positions in the NBA Draft. So, stay updated on any recent injuries, surgeries, or controversies off the court. This knowledge can give you an edge over other bettors and the sportsbook.
A player like Chet Holmgren, who had an injury just before the 2022 NBA Draft, could see his draft stock drop. And a bettor who takes this factor into consideration has a superior chance of making the right call once the action gets underway.
5. Analyse Team Draft History
You will likely notice a pattern if you evaluate a team’s past draft history. While some teams may pick players based on their potential, others may pay more attention to their proven performances.
For instance, the San Antonio Spurs are known for selecting international players, which could give you an idea of which players they’ll pick during the 2024 NBA Draft.
How to Use 2024 NBA Mock Drafts to Aid Your Betting
In the lead-up to the NBA Draft, experts release NBA mock drafts, which predict the order in which they expect players to come off the board. The mocks are usually well-researched, taking key factors like player performance, team needs, and historical trends into account.
Although mock drafts are not always accurate, they can point you in the right direction when making your wagers.
ESPN
ESPN, a leading source for sports analysis, provides some of the most accurate and respected mock drafts. Analysts like Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz offer scouting reports, insider information, and updates leading up to the draft.
DraftExpress
Now part of ESPN, DraftExpress offers comprehensive mock drafts informed by in-depth analysis. Experts like Jonathan Givony provide video breakdowns, helping you understand player strengths and weaknesses.
The Ringer
The Ringer provides well-thought-out mock drafts curated by experts like Kevin O’Connor. They also produce articles and podcasts highlighting team needs and player ability.
CBS Sports
On CBS Sports, Gary Parrish and Kyle Boone offer accurate mock drafts and expert commentary. The long-standing news outlet regularly updates its mocks and includes in-depth analysis.
NBADraft.net
NBADraft.net is another top place to find the best NBA mock drafts. The site provides player information, scouring reports, and past draft data to help you make winning bet selections.
Expert NBA Draft Betting Predictions 2024
If you want to wager on the 2024 NBA Draft, consider the following well-thought-out predictions by the SportsTalkPhilly experts.
Zaccharie Risacher to be the No. 1 Overall Pick
Most recently representing JL Bourg in the France LNB Pro A league, Zaccharie Risacher is the favorite to be the No. 1 Overall Pick at the 2024 NBA Draft. The public consensus is that the Atlanta Hawks will add the 19-year-old to the attacking ranks of Trae Young and John Collins.
Risacher enjoyed a stellar 2023-24 season with JL Bourg in the EuroLeague, averaging 11.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
Bronny James Drafted Below 41.5 Draft Position
Bronny James, son of legendary NBA superstar LeBron James, has plenty of eyes on him ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft. The Lakers (17th and 55th picks) and the Sun (22nd pick) are favorites to select the shooting guard.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Timberwolves (27th and 37th picks) and Toronto Raptors (19th and 31st picks) are potential destinations for the 6 ft 2 in player. Considering these interested parties and their pick numbers, we expect Bronny James to go off the board below the 41.5 position.
Ronald Holland in the Top 10
Ronald Holland was a top performer in the 2023-24 G League season, averaging 20.6 points, 3.2 assists, 6.6 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and almost a block per game. These numbers have made him an attractive option for NBA teams looking for a small forward or power forward.
As one of the better players in the 2024 NBA Draft, we expect the 6 ft 8-inch player to go in the top 10.
