With spring workouts all wrapped up, we've reached the point in the NFL schedule where exactly nothing happens. Barring unforeseen off-the-field issues or transactions, things will stay relatively quiet until training camp opens on July 24.
We'll kick off this dead period by reviewing the Eagles' schedule and predicting how everything could go for the team during their 2017 campaign. First, we'll take a look at the Eagles first four opponents.
Week 1 at Washington Redskins
In 2013, Chip Kelly and company unleashed an opening week offensive assault on Washington. With his new offensive weapons in tow, Carson Wentz has an opportunity to put up some big numbers early this season.
The Eagles have struggled against the Redskins during the past few seasons, but Washington enters 2017 with a lot of question marks. Kirk Cousins' future with the franchise remains in doubt and it wouldn't be surprising to see the team knocked down a few pegs this year.
Wentz and the Eagles will jump out to an early lead and coast to their first victory of 2017.
Result: Eagles win, 31-14
Record: 1-0
Week 2 at Kansas City Chiefs
This game will receive a lot of hype during the week, and deservedly so. Not only is Doug Pederson facing his former employer, but also his mentor. And on the flip side, Andy Reid is going against the team he coached for 14 years.
The Chiefs bested the Eagles in a Thursday night showdown the last time these two teams played and Kansas City has remained a contender in the AFC ever since. It will be hard for Pederson to out-coach Reid and the Eagles could come out a bit flat after opening up the season with a big road win.
This game certainly isn't unwinnable, but it will take a few more weeks before all of the Eagles new pieces start gelling together.
Result: Chiefs win, 24-17
Record: 1-1
Week 3 vs. New York Giants
After two weeks on the road, the Eagles will return home to an eager crowd. The Birds have had a lot of success against the Giants in recent years and as the Eagles continue to improve as a team, that success should continue.
This seems like a perfect time for Jim Schwartz to unleash Derek Barnett to the tune of a multi-sack game. The Linc will be rocking as the Eagles beat down their division rival behind an electric performance from their rookie first-round pick and their budding franchise quarterback.
Result: Eagles win, 35-24
Record: 2-1
Week 4 at San Diego Chargers
The Chargers are a team that remains in a bit of flux, but they still have some talent on their roster and a great quarterback in Philip Rivers. It is always difficult for a team to travel across the country and try to win a game.
Maybe this will finally be a letdown after three solid weeks. The Eagles warts and inexperience will be exposed by a veteran quarterback. Offensively, Wentz will be hounded all afternoon by Joey Bosa and company and struggle to get into a rhythm.
Still, the Eagles will remain in the game and have a chance to win it in the end, but Wentz will get too aggressive and toss an interception in the closing seconds. Fans will be up in arms and sports-talk radio will be filled with debates about how the young signal-caller is overrated. However, it will all be over blown.
Result: Chargers win, 27-21
Record: 2-2
