Draft Day is finally upon us.
In just a few hours, the Eagles will make their first-round selection and add the newest player to the fold.
For several weeks, we’ve examined the targets and looked at the possibilities and areas the Eagles need to address. Here then are what seem to be the five most-likely targets for the Eagles with the 14th overall pick.
CB Marshon Lattimore – The Eagles biggest need is cornerback. Lattimore has consistently been rated as the best in the Draft, though ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has said that is certainly up for debate — not as a mark against Lattimore, but a glowing review of the cornerback class in this draft. If Lattimore is still on the board at 14, it would almost be a given, as he’s still a projected Top-10 pick. But stranger things have happened, and with such a good CB class, the Eagles may opt to get a playmaker at another position where depth is limited.
CB Gareon Conley – Assuming Lattimore doesn’t make it out of the Top 10 but the Eagles still go cornerback, this may be their guy. Conley is projected to be right in the thick of things at the midway point of the first round, and has received reviews that rank right up there with Lattimore. It’s fairly comparable, which could be good news for the Eagles if a few names start dropping off between picks No. 8 and 13. Of course, Conley’s rumored accusations of sexual assault could make this a little less likely.
LB Reuben Foster – Not only have the Eagles been linked to the Alabama linebacker, but there is reason to believe he may be available at 14 and among the best defensive players in the draft. The Eagles need help in the middle as much as their secondary and pass rush, so there really is no wrong pick on the defensive side of the ball by position, but Foster’s reputation hasn’t been great lately. He was sent home from the Combine for an alleged altercation while waiting for his medical check and then had a diluted drug test, which is viewed as a positive drug test. Both incidents are said to have hurt his stock, but his abilities may be enough for a team like the Eagles, at 14, to overlook and make the selection.
RB Christian McCaffrey – The Eagles also have a need at running back, and who better to get than this one. It seems that McCaffrey is the talk of the draft at the running back position and projected to go in the Top 10. There are other options for the Eagles that would warrant the first-round selection, but if the Eagles are going to address that position in the first round, they might as well aim high. I’d also venture to say that if the Eagles can’t get a back like McCaffrey in the first round, they will wait on running back until Day 2 and select a defensive player.
WR Corey Davis – The Eagles don’t have a glaring need at wide receiver after signing Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith in free agency, but there are three talent receivers projected to go in the first round, and the Eagles could certainly have interest. Again, it may be best to just aim for the highest here. Corey Davis also has some Top 10 potential, or is at least projected to go before the 14th pick, but in a trio that was dominated by Mike Williams National Championship performance and John Ross’ record 40-yard time, Davis may be the best all-around wide receiver to go in the first round, and would give Carson Wentz an offensive weapon to grow with him. The same could be said for choosing a running back, but it’s obvious how a new, young wide receiver would make a difference for Wentz. Keep an eye on all three, but Davis in particular.
