NEWARK, Del. — The Delaware 87ers, the NBA Development League affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers, have signed former two-time NBA All-Star point guard Baron Davis, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.
Charania writes:
No D-League team had signed Davis until he planned to join Delaware, which has lost guards Jordan McRae (Cleveland) and Sean Kilpatrick (Brooklyn) to NBA call-ups. As long as Davis reports in shape, Delaware will move forward with the signing, sources said.
Davis, 36, led the NBA twice in steals during the 2003-04 and 2006-07 campaigns as a member of the New Orleans Hornets and Golden State Warriors, respectively. The third overall selection in the 1999 NBA Draft last appeared in the league during the 2011-12 season as a member of the New York Knicks. In Game 4 of the opening round of the 2012 NBA Playoffs against the Miami Heat, Davis suffered a season-ending injury to his right knee: a dislocated patella, as well as a complete tear of its ACL and MCL.
Thank yall for the love.. This is going to be fun …Get to hoop again Another step in a long journey. #humbled #blessed #stillgrindingtho

"Our organizational efforts continue to center on finding, developing and producing opportunity to talented professionals," said Philadelphia 76ers Chief of Staff and Delaware 87ers General Manager Brandon D. Williams in a press release. "Baron still has much to contribute to the game, and we're excited to play a role as he transitions through the next phase of his successful career."
During the 2012-13 NBA season, sidelined from surgery recovery, Davis worked with the Knicks in an "advisory capacity" and helped with charity work, in-game entertainment and scouting.
In signing with the 87ers, the 13-year veteran hopes to return to the NBA in search of his first championship. Since the summer of 2013, Davis has attempted to make a comeback. One year ago, TMZ reported that he had been in "communication with multiple playoff contenders," which included the Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers.
On Jan. 15, Davis decided to go another route to a return by signing with the NBA D-League. Because he went unclaimed in the waiver wire process, he was able to sign with any club within the league. Davis reportedly worked out with the Texas Legends on Jan. 9, the D-League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks, before signing with the 87ers on Wednesday.
Davis is expected to make his Sevens debut on Friday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in a home contest against the Iowa Energy.
