Aaron Harang struggles mightily as Diamondbacks blast Phillies in series opener

The Diamondbacks scored a combined nine innings in the fifth and sixth innings, defeating the Phillies by a score of 11-3 on Monday night at Chase Field. Aaron Harang struggled with command as the game drew along and the D'Backs began to tee of on him along with the Phillies bullpen in the fifth inning. Harang had a 2.02 ERA in his first 11 starts with the Phillies. Over his last nine, his ERA is 8.10.

The Phils went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position while Arizona went 6-for-10. A game like this is rather uncharacteristic of this second half Phillies team that has been so promising. The Phillies outfielders also had some troubles fielding balls with Asche, Herrera and Brown all bobbling baseballs at different points throughout the game. At this point, the Phillies have to throw this game away and attempt to rebound on Tuesday night.

Just like on Sunday, the Phillies got on the board first, this time in the third. Carlos Ruiz hit a double to left to lead off and advanced to third on a fielding error by David Peralta. Two batters later, Chase Utley plated Chooch with a sac fly to center to give the Phils a 1-0 lead.

The Diamondbacks got the run back in their half of the inning. Aaron Harang got two quick outs before Jake Lamb smacked a triple to right field. Paul Goldschmidt followed with an RBI-single to even things up at one a piece. Arizona took a 2-1 lead in the fourth courtesy of a solo blast from Yasmany Tomas on a hanging pitch up in the zone from Aaron Harang.

In the fifth, Chase Utley hit a two-out single to center. Cesar Hernandez ripped a double to left-center field, scoring Chase to tie the game at two. That tie wouldn't hold though. A.J. Pollack led of the bottom of the inning with a triple to center. After Harang walked Jake Lamb, Paul Goldschmidt drove in Pollack with a sac fly to center, giving Arizona a 3-2 edge. David Peralta followed with a double to plate Lamb to give the D'Backs a two-run lead, 4-2. Arizona catcher Welington Castillo then took Harang deep to center field for a solo homer, extending their lead to 5-2.

Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco got the team a run back in the sixth with a 445-foot mammoth home run to center field, making it a 5-3 ballgame. Meanwhile, Jaime Romak came in to pinch-hit for Arizona in the bottom of the sixth and hit an RBI double to left, putting the D'Backs lead back at three, 6-3. David Peralta followed with an infield single to score Jamie Romak. Welington Castillo cleared the bases with a triple to left, adding insult to injury, for a 10-3 lead. Yasmany Tomas singled in Castillo to make it an 11-3 game. In the seventh, Arizona added on two more via a two-run homer from A.J. Pollack. That would conclude the scoring.
