Aaron Nola solid in debut; Yanks blank Phils in shortened game, 10-0

WP: Michael Pineda (2-0, 1.32 ERA) LP: Jake Diekman (0-1, 12.27 ERA)

The Philadelphia Phillies (11-13) were shutout 10-0 by the New York Yankees (14-11) this afternoon in a shortened game because of rain at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida.

Aaron Nola was slated to start, however the early threat of rain opted Ryne Sandberg to give closer Jonathan Papelbon the rare nod instead with the possibility of a delay.

Papelbon, 34, struck out his first faced batter, left fielder Brett Gardner, and then got third baseman Chase Headley to ground out to first baseman Ryan Howard . Despite allowing a walk to right fielder Carlos Beltran, he was able to get out of the inning after the subsequent batter, with Mark Teixeira popping out to shortstop Freddy Galvis.

Nola, 21, made his Phillies' debut in relief, entering the game in the top of the second inning following Papelbon's scheduled one inning of work.

Despite getting into trouble in each of his three innings of work, allowing four runners total to reach scoring position, Nola was successful in damage control by not allowing a Yankee to score.

Nola struck out four batters: Chase Headley, Carlos Beltran, Alex Rodriguez and Chris Young. That's a pretty impressive feat for the rookie in his debut with the major league club, considering those four Yankees have a combined 6,810 games of playing experience and 29,015 plate appearances throughout their careers.

Drafted seventh overall in the first round of the 2014 draft, Nola is widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best, prospect in the Phillies' farm system. Last season with the Clearwater Threshers and Reading Fightin Phils, the former LSU ace allowed 18 earned runs in 55.1 innings for a combined 2.93 ERA. Today, he allowed five hits against 13 faced batters.

Phillies' left handed reliever Jake Diekman surely did not have one of his better outings today, and he himself coined it as 'embarrassing'. Diekman, 28, allowed seven runs on six hits and one walk in just a third of an inning of work in the top of the fourth.

Yankees' starter Michael Pineda had a solid outing today in five shutout innings, allowing just five hits and striking out five batters.

The game entered a rain delay with two outs in the top of the sixth, and was eventually called with the Yankees on top convincingly.

Right hander Hector Neris, 25, allowed the other three runs on four hits and two walks in 1.1 innings after coming in for Diekman in the fifth.

The Phillies' offense reached base just five times today on hits from Ben Revere, Russ Canzler (2), Odubel Herrera, and Cameron Rupp.
