Final: Phillies 9, Cardinals 2
WP: Adam Morgan (1-0, 1.59 ERA) LP: Michael Wacha (9-3, 2.85 ERA)
Philadelphia, PA - In a Father's Day, series finale matinee against right hander Michael Wacha and the St. Louis Cardinals (45-24), the Philadelphia Phillies (24-47) scored a season-high nine runs behind rookie left hander Adam Morgan in his major league debut.
For the first time in 25 games, a Phillies' starting pitcher has earned a victory. They were 0-16 during this stretch with a 5.97 ERA. Also with today's victory, the Phillies avoided being swept for the seventh time this season.
The Phillies got on board first in today's series finale matinee. Right fielder Domonic Brown began the bottom of the second inning with his first double of the season. Then, left fielder Cody Asche followed with a double of his own, his eighth, to score Brown.
Later on in the second, with the bases loaded and two outs, second baseman Cesar Hernandez singled to right-center field to bring home two additional runners and give the Phillies an early 3-0 lead.
Morgan was solid in his major league debut over 5.2 innings of work. He surrendered just six hits, two walks, and one earned run, a solo blast to shortstop Jhonny Peralta in the top of the fourth.
The southpaw received five runs of support while on the mound, two of which came in the bottom of the fifth inning. With center fielder Ben Revere on third base and one out, rookie third baseman Maikel Franco doubled for the eighth time this season to give the Phillies a 4-1 advantage. Another run was added soon thereafter, as first baseman Ryan Howard followed with a RBI-single to center field to score Franco.
Offensive production from the Phillies was not done just yet. The next inning, Odubel Herrera and Revere hit back-to-back singles to subsequently bring home their sixth run of the game, thanks to both of their speed on the diamond.
In the bottom of the seventh scoring continued for Ryne Sandberg's team. With Howard on second and Brown on first, pinch-hitter Andres Blanco hit a massive, three-run home run to right center field. This blew open the game in favor of Philadelphia, 9-1.
The only other Cardinals' run scored today, other than Peralta's fourth inning solo-shot off of Morgan, was a solo home run of his own by right fielder Jason Heyward. This came against Jonathan Papelbon in the top of the ninth, who was appearing in his 27th game of the season.
