Maligned defense leads Flyers to victory

Three Flyers defenseman lit the lamp. Claude Giroux extended his point streak to nine games. Michal Neuvirth made 26 saves to help the Philadelphia Flyers defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 on Sunday night.

After exchanging chances through the first 10 plus minutes of the game, the Flyers got the first power play of the night. Mid way through the man advantage, Shayne Gostisbehere turned the puck over at the Hurricanes blue line leading to a partial breakaway. Gostisbehere was called for hooking on the play setting up some four on four play.

Following the four on four, Carolina had about a minute of power play time that was ultimately cut short by a too many men penalty. It was on the ensuing power play the Flyers would capitalize.

Shayne Gostisbehere would open the scoring at 17:57 of the first period. Gostisbehere beat Cam Ward for his second of the season on the power play.  The goal was unassisted.

Michal Neuvirth made nine saves in the opening stanza to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Justin Falk got Carolina even at 1:01 of the second. Falk took what appeared to be an innocent shot from the point that found it's way past Neuvirth. It was the third goal of the season for Falk.

Radko Gudas put the Flyers ahead 2-1 at 7:07 of the period. Gudas took a similarly innocent shot to Falk's and beat Ward for his first of the season. Giroux and Simmonds had the assists.

Jeff Skinner tied it at 2-2 just three minutes later. Skinner beat Neuvirth in tight as the Flyers were on a delayed penalty call. It was Skinner's fifth of the year.

Viktor Stalberg put Carolina ahead just a minute later. Ivan Provorov turned the puck over at the Hurricanes blue line and Stalberg went in on partial breakaway where he beat Neuvirth. The goal was his second of the season.

Claude Giroux drew the Flyers even at 17:14 of the period with his second of the year. The Flyers captain buried a shot from the slot past Ward. Simmonds had the lone assist.

Despite outshooting the Hurricanes 12-8 in the period and 25-17 through two periods, the Flyers would have to settle for a 3-3 tie after two periods.

Brandon Manning would put the Flyers ahead at 8:00 of the third period. Manning scored a shorthanded goal off a great pass from Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. The goal was his second of the season. Both goals have come against Carolina.

The Hurricanes would apply the better of the pressure the rest of the way but were unable to beat Neuvirth as the Flyers would hold on for a 4-3 victory.

The Flyers are back in action on Wednesday night when they host the Red Wings.
