ELMONT, NEW YORK - APRIL 06: Alex Ovechkin #8 of the Washington Capitals celebrates after scoring his 895th career goal during the second period against the New York Islanders to become the NHL all-time goals leader at UBS Arena on April 06, 2025 in Elmont, New York.

When Alex Ovechkin broke into the NHL 20 years ago, Wayne Gretzky’s goal record stood as one that may never be broken. Reaching the mountaintop of 894 goals seems so far away.

On Friday night, Ovechkin scored two goals to reach 894, also securing his 14th 40-goal season, an NHL record. That moved him into a tie with the Great One.

On Sunday, the Great 8 officially topped the Great One. Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal against the New York Islanders to set the all-time goal scoring record on the power play at 7:26 of the second period. You can watch the historic goal below:

The record was set by Gretzky on March 23, 1994, just over 31 years ago. Ironically, Ovechkin set the record in his 1,487th game of his career, the same number of NHL games Gretzky played in his career. Gretzky scored his 894th goal in his 1,479th NHL game.

Ovechkin also holds the NHL record for power-play goals (325), game-winning goals (136), and shots on goal (6,847). He scored the record-setting goal on llya Sorokin, the 183rd goaltender Ovechkin has scored on, also an NHL record.

Another NHL record Ovechkin holds is for empty-net goals with 65. He had the opportunity to secure the record on Friday with an empty-net situation, but opted to stay on the bench to set the record with a goal against a goaltender.

Ovechkin is one of the most noted Flyer killers over the years. Ovechkin has played in 78 games against the Flyers in his career and scored 52 goals, tied for second-most against any opponent with the Carolina Hurricanes and trailing only the Winnipeg Jets/Atlanta Thrashers franchise (57). Ovechkin’s 52 goals against the Flyers is also second to Sidney Crosby (56) for most by an opposing player.
