Prior the Eagles season opener on Sunday, Vice President Joe Biden was on the field for the opening ceremonies honoring the 15th anniversary of 9/11. Once the game was over, he passed a message on to President Barack Obama regarding rookie quarterback Carson Wentz, which the commander in chief shared at a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
"He told me, 'Barack, you've got to get on the Wentz Wagon!'" the President said. "'They've got a new quarterback. We've got hope in Philly.'"
With the Eagles playing the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football next week, don't expect the President to jump on that easily.
"I had to explain that I am a Bears fan," Obama said. "And we play Philly next Monday night. So I've got to stick with my team, but I am going to go to Philly and scout out what all of the fuss was about."
So maybe the President isn't quite on the Wentz Wagon. But there are certainly plenty of others who are.
According to Fanatics, the company that runs the NFL Shop and has over 300 stores for major sports leagues, Wentz's jersey has been the top-seller among all NFL players since Sunday among online sales.
And truth be told, not only online, but walk into any sporting goods store. Good luck finding a No. 11 jersey. They will be populating the seats at Lincoln Financial Field, tailgate parties and Eagles viewing parties around the Delaware Valley.
But Wentz's debut hardly sparked a rush to malls and sporting goods stores in Philadelphia. Wentz's jersey, a top-seller in Philadelphia throughout the offseason, is the top-selling jersey in the New York, Washington, Baltimore and Los Angeles markets since Sunday as well. This also doesn't include the large contingent of North Dakota fans that have also probably purchased the jersey of the Eagles rookie.
It's certainly a trend that will be catching on for Eagles fans, especially if Wentz has several repeat performances of Sunday's impressive debut.
