So far the Phillies have been relatively quiet, other than signing incumbent Phillies Jerome Williams and Grady Sizemore to new contracts. This has frustrated Phillies fans, who have been assured of change for 2015. Despite the relatively quiet Phillies offseason, Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. says that the Phillies indeed are very active this offseason.
Amaro spoke to Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News:
"I'm actually probably optimistic about what's been going on, dialogue-wise, some of the things we've discussed externally and internally," Amaro said over the weekend. "It's been a very, very active communication market so far. Starting with the [GM] meetings [last month], and even before that, there's been a lot of dialogue in a variety of areas.
"It's fortunate we've stayed out of the rumor mill, because I prefer to do things quietly. And it doesn't do anybody any good when it's out there. I like when it's quiet. I like the dialogue we've had in the last several weeks."
That dialogue could come to a head the next few days at the Winter Meetings.
Of course, dialogue is just that: dialogue. If this dialogue results in nothing, Phillies fans will not be happy. In some ways, Phillies fans will be upset if certain beloved players are traded, and will be upset if the Phillies stand pat. Thus, the pressure is on for the Phillies to get it right.
