Moving on from Manny Machado — for now — Matt Klentak and the Philadelphia Phillies are now looking elsewhere to improve the club, which sits in sole possession of first place in the National League East with 73 days until the regular season finale.
While the Phillies likely continues their interest in "Plan B" offensive upgrades like Mike Moustakas, Josh Donaldson and Adrian Beltre, the club reportedly is expected to "continue kicking the tires" on starting pitching, according to an American League scout.
"Machado would have been a huge get, but they will still be active players because it does not seem like money is an issue," the scout told MLB.com's Mark Bowman. "The rotation lacks a true No. 1, but they have pitched better lately."
Bowman writes that the current Phillies starting pitching targets include 2008 World Series champion southpaws Cole Hamels and J.A. Happ, along with Detroit Tigers RHP Michael Fulmer — who is "drawing interest from multiple NL East contenders."
Fancred's Jon Heyman first linked to Hamels to the Phillies on July 3, reporting "some chatter" on a "possible reunion." NBC Sports Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury reported on Monday that Happ ranks third on the Phillies' "wish list," behind Machado and Baltimore Orioles closer Zach Britton. Fulmer has been linked to the Phillies over the past couple seasons, most recently on June 29.
Of the three potential starting pitching acquisitions, Happ seems to have performed the most effectively this season, en route to his first-career All-Star nod. Among the three, Happ has the most wins (10) and strikeouts (121), and the lowest ERA (4.29) and WHIP (1.193). All three pitchers have appeared in 19 starts.
Assuming Happ now becomes the Phillies' second target on their "wish list," with Machado dealt to Los Angeles, he would have the second-most wins if inserted into the Phillies' rotation behind fellow All-Star Aaron Nola and Jake Arrieta. Happ's 121 strikeouts would also be the second most.

According to the American League scout, through Bowman, the Phillies "will be willing to give up premium prospects," however they are against "completely wrecking what they have been doing."
"My expectation is they will target veteran-type starting pitchers," the scout said.
"Without Machado, I just don't see a significant bat available that would be an upgrade."
