Nobody knew they had a thought to do so. With Peter Bourjois in center, Mike Trout in left, Mark Trumbo in right field, and Kendry Morales at DH the Angels seemed booked. But never count Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim owner Arte Moreno out.
Eager to shock the world again, just like last season's unexpected signing of Albert Pujols, the Angels swooped in and signed free agent outfielder Josh Hamilton to a five-year, $125 million contract. Let that sink in.
The Angels probably will trade somebody. In need of a right-handed power bat, Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro will probably check in on rightfielder Mark Trumbo, a 2012 American League All Star with power. His second half was not what his first half was, but he is still a potent offensive force from the right side of the plate.
It may not be Trumbo who goes. The Angels have plenty of options with the pieces they have. Bourjois could be moved in a trade and Hamilton play center field. Kendrys Morales could be moved and Trumbo serve as designated hitter. No, the Angels will not trade Mike Trout. Albert Pujols is also going nowhere. Vernon Wells likely will be a fifth outfielder on the team.
Lifetime Hamilton is a .304 hitter with 161 home runs and 553 RBI. Teams mentioned to be in the mix for Hamilton included the Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners, and the Texas Rangers
