In a move to shore up the Phillies bench, the Phillies sent utility infielder Freddy Galvis to the Miami Marlins for utility infielder Greg Dobbs, according to various media outlets. The move gives the Phillies a veteran left-handed bench presence with some power. Galvis was expendable because the Phillies have depth at AAA in Michael Martinez should a middle infielder succumb to injury.
In an ESPN interview, Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. explained the move:
We felt our bench needed a bit of a boost from the left side. With Laynce Nix going to be starting many games in left field, we felt it important to add a left-handed pinch hitter. We also felt Freddy did not have adequate experience at third base, so Dobbers gives us another option at third in case Michael Young needs a day off against a tough right-handed pitcher.
The Marlins plan to use Galvis as their starting shortstop. In the Miami Herald, Marlins writer Clark Spencer speculates on Galvis' presence in the Marlins lineup:
The switch-hitting Galvis will slot into the number two spot in the Marlins lineup behind Juan Pierre and ahead of Giancarlo Stanton and cleanup hitter Placido Polanco. Having spent a good portion of 2012 hitting behind Pierre in the Phillies' lineup, it is a comfortable situation for Galvis.
The move makes the Phillies the clear favorite in the National League East.
