Asher, Phillies face struggling Orioles

SARASOTA, Fla. — With just three weeks remaining until Opening Day—Monday, April 4, against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark—the Philadelphia Phillies (10-3-2) will look for their 10th win out of their last 11 contests as they oppose right-hander Yovani Gallardo and the Baltimore Orioles (1-11-2).

Barring an unexpected matchup late in postseason play, the Phillies will face Buck Showalter's squad for the final time of 2016. The Phillies will send right-hander Alec Asher to the mound for his second start of the spring in a rematch against Gallardo and the Orioles, who have the worst spring training record throughout baseball. The two first met last Wednesday as the Phillies pulled away with an 8-4, split-squad victory.

Prior to the game, the Phillies announced that they have reassigned top prospects—shortstop J.P. Crawford and outfielder Nick Williams—to minor league camp. In addition, they have optioned right-hander Edubray Ramos and outfielder Roman Quinn to Double-A Reading.

Game Notes:

  • With outfielder Nick Williams reassigned to minor league camp, Cedric Hunter and David Lough are the only remaining non-roster invitee outfielders in big-league camp. Hunter, 28, is batting .227/.308/.808 this spring with four runs scored, one home run and six runs-batted-in. Lough, 30, is batting .333/.478/1.034 with six runs scored, one home run and four runs-battted-in. With Roman Quinn demoted to Double-A, Aaron Altherr injured and just Cody Asche, Peter Bourjos, Tyler Goeddel and Odubel Herrera remaining on the 40-man roster, Hunter and Lough still have time to compete for a role on the Opening Day roster.
  • Right-handers Jeremy Hellickson and Charlie Morton threw in minor league games at the Carpenter Complex Saturday in Clearwater. Both pitchers, who missed starts last week due to experiencing flu-like symptoms, struck out four batters over four shutout innings in their appearances.
  • While the Phillies have the third-best team ERA this spring (3.43), allowing 51 earned runs in 134 innings, the Orioles have the worst ERA throughout Major League Baseball, 7.28, with 97 earned runs over 120 innings.
