The Flyers preseason gets underway on Sunday afternoon with a matchup against the New York Islanders. The opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.

Not much changed on Day 2 from Flyers training camp. In fact, the intensity only picked up. Another day of drills and battles commenced on Saturday with both groups remaining the same and the lines remaining the same.

Friday marked the official on-ice open of Flyers training camp, as 57 players started the journey to making the Flyers roster for the 2017-18 season. The players were split into two groups taking the ice at different times. Here are a few notes from the day’s happenings.

The Flyers have returned forwards Morgan Frost, Isaac Ratcliffe, Matthew Strome and Maksim Sushko back to their junior teams, GM Ron Hextall announced. This brings the Flyers training camp roster down to 57 entering Friday’s sessions to open camp.

The Islanders erased a 3-1 deficit in the closing minutes of the third and after surviving another flurry of chances in overtime, Mitchell Vande Sompel scored on a two-on-one to give the Islanders a 4-3 overtime win over the Flyers in the Rookie Game on Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Center.

There is a bit of added hype to rookie camp this season with a lot of new faces taking the ice for the first time in Flyers colors. A big reason for that hype is because of the offseason Ron Hextall had, leaving the door open for Flyers prospects to make the team.

In their first win against the Redskins after five straight losses, it was some impressive escapability by Carson Wentz and clutch plays from the defense that proved to be the difference.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux is well aware of how the past two years have gone and his focus this season is on putting it behind him and returning to form.

For Anthony Stolarz, who was re-signed and protected from the Expansion Draft during the offseason, it instantly cuts short a season that would have meant a lot to prove himself as the Flyers goalie of the future moving forward. For Alex Lyon, opportunity knocks once again.

In limited playing time, the Eagles offensive line didn’t look good in the preseason. The Eagles are a team with a lot of question marks and the answers will ultimately dictate their success this season. As in seasons past, a lot of the Eagles success will depend on the offensive line.

GM Ron Hextall announced on Friday that goalie Anthony Stolarz underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus on his left knee on Thursday and will be out indefinitely.

With training camp just one week away, the guys preview the Flyers training camp roster, position battles to come in camp and make predictions on the Flyers opening night lineup.

The Flyers announced the dates and roster for training camp, set to open next Friday, Sept. 15. In total, 61 players will participate in training camp — 37 forwards, 17 defensemen and seven goaltenders.

The start of Flyers training camp, which for Nolan Patrick begins with rookie camp on Monday, provides the chance for him to prove himself and see what he can do.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux responded to Jeremy Roenick’s offseason comments regarding his struggles and decline and the response was mainly in agreement.

When the Flyers drafted Nolan Patrick with the second overall pick, the assumption, from hockey experts to fans and beyond, was that he would be in the Orange and Black come October. But as is the case with Flyers GM Ron Hextall, don’t assume anything until it’s set in stone.

Rhys Hoskins hit a go-ahead RBI double to put the Phillies in the lead for good in the sixth inning, as Aaron Nola rebounded from back-to-back rough starts to again fire a gem against the Braves in a 6-1 Phillies win on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park.

The Flyers will retire Eric Lindros’ No. 88 in a ceremony prior to the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018. 

The Flyers announced a rookie game against the Islanders to be held at Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday, Sept. 13, with tickets being free on a first-come, first-serve basis. The tickets released upon the “sale” date of Aug. 22 were gone within four hours.

As the regular season nears, the Eagles will have to make a decision on Mychal Kendricks, and the strong preseason may have earned him another shot as a key part of the defense.

On Sunday, four days from the Eagles final preseason game, they added more depth at the cornerback position, trading safety Terrence Brooks to the New York Jets for cornerback Dexter McDougle.

Wayne Simmonds turns 29 on Saturday, and while that still has him in the prime of his career, on the Flyers, he’s one of the most experienced and older forwards on the team. With the direction the Flyers are shifting, Simmonds sees this youth injection coming as a way for the veterans to be sparked as well.

The Flyers will host the New York Islanders in a rookie game on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Center. Tickets for the game will be free and become available on the Flyers official website at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Parking at Wells Fargo Center will also be free.
