It's crazy how quickly the NFL offseason shifts into focus. Sure, the city of Philadelphia is still gleaming from the Eagles'41-33 Super Bowl win earlier this month, but now a lot of people are honing in on how they can repeat next year and what pieces the organization should bring back. One of the most impressive facets of the Eagles' success was their run game. The team boasted three talented backs in Jay Ajayi, LeGarrette Blount and undrafted free agent Corey Clement. Blount, an unrestricted free agent, was the featured back before becoming more of a closer for the Eagles, getting the carries in third down and short conversions. After Ajayi was brought in and Clement began to play well, Blount received less carries than usual, but that was never really a problem for him thanks in large part to how running backs coach Duce Staley prepared each of the backs.
“I can’t say enough about Duce [RB coach Duce Staley] just for the simple fact of how well I was coached there and how he helped me understand things,” Blount told NFL Network's Total Access. “I feel like Duce is one of the best RB coaches. He’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever had in my entire life. I want to be a part of that for a while so we will see how it goes.”
Blount rushed for 766 yards on 173 carries during the regular season, scoring two rushing touchdowns and one touchdown reception. In the postseason, the 9th year veteran averaged 4.5 yards per carry, scoring a touchdown in each round of the playoffs. Blount was an integral part of the Eagles' championship victory, tallying 90 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown in Super Bowl LII. His 21-yard score in the first half put the Eagles up 16-3.
The Eagles signed Blount to a one-year deal worth just under $3 million, but after his big role in the playoffs, he might command more than that over multiple years. The Eagles will likely feature Jay Ajayi as the lead back next season and Corey Clement has solidified himself a role in the backfield as well. It would be surprising if the team brings back Darren Sproles, and Blount fits into a power back role that was beneficial for them this season. Blount now has three Super Bowl rings and he's sure to have some suitors on the free agent market. That being said, the 31-year-old back would definitely consider a return to the Eagles.
It will all depend on what the Eagles do with their salary cap as they have a number of decisions to make on players to extend/cut prior to making the bigger signing decisions.
