Braves rout Phillies, earn first road series win since early July

The Phillies began their six-man rotation tonight against the Braves, sending David Buchanan to the hill for the first time since he got shelled for 11 runs in 1 2/3 innings back on August 11th in Arizona. Buchanan's performance wasn't as bad, but it wasn't good at all, allowing 10 hits and four runs in just 3 1/3 innings tonight in the Phillies 8-1 defeat to the Braves. Atlanta starter Julio Teheran continued his success against the Phils, tossing seven innings of one-run ball to earn his 10th win of the season.

Atlanta takes two out of three on the road, winning a series away from Turner Field for the first time since July 6th-8th. It's also their first series victory since August 16-18. The Phillies have now lost 12 of their last 16 games.

Nick Markakis doubled to begin the game and Hector Olivera followed with a single. Phillies starter David Buchanan then hit Freddie Freeman, loading the bases with no outs. Fortunately, Buchanan induced a double play ball off the bat of Nick Swisher, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead, but erasing base runners.

The Phillies tied things up in the second. Darnell Sweeney hit a one-out triple. Cody Asche plated him with an RBI groundout to even things up at one.

Braves catcher Christian Bethancourt led the fourth inning off with a solo home run to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. Michael Bourn singled and two batters later, Nick Markakis drew a walk. Hector Olivera singled to load the bases with one out. Freddie Freeman made David Buchanan pay for his poor pitching, lacing a two-run single to right, extending the Atlanta lead to 4-1. That was the end of the day for Buchanan as the Phils called upon Jerome Williams to take over with the bases. Williams got Jace Peterson to ground into a double play, ending any further threat.

Ken Roberts came on to make his Phillies debut in the sixth and issued a walk and allowed a double to Nick Swisher with no outs. An Andrelton Simmons sac fly with one down made it a 5-1 ballgame in favor of the Braves. An RBI-single by Nick Markakis in the seventh made it a 6-1 game. Atlanta made it 8-1 in the eighth, courtesy of a two-out two-run triple off the bat of Michael Bourn.
