Buzz Bissinger, the author of "Friday Night Lights" has strong opinions and is not afraid to share them.
Last season, he wrote a cover story in the Philadelphia magazine which criticized Nick Foles for being a rich white kid from Texas, called him a chickensh*t that was too nice to lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl, and described him as the poster boy for Roger Goddell because he is "contrite, non-charismatic, cautious, churchgoing, [and] Caucasian."
Many, including yours truly, considered it a cheap shot article that was motivated by Foles refusing to be interviewed by Bissinger for the story.
Now, Bissinger is coming hard after Eagles head coach Chip Kelly.
“I don’t like him because he’s a fraud. He’s a fraud because he gets ordained by the media, and even now they’re too nice to him. He has no clue," Kissinger told Angelo Cataldi on 94.1 WIP this morning.
“It’s his arrogance that I hate. It’s his feeling that ‘I don’t need personnel, I don’t need players, I just need my system. And if we don’t win, it’s because the players didn’t execute my system.’ That’s BS," Bissinger said.
If the irony of Bissinger attacking Kelly for his "arrogance" is not lost on you, then you are not alone.
Bissinger also took Kelly to task for saying the Eagles problems come back to a lack of execution by the players, which many have interpreted as Kelly throwing his players under the bus for his own schematic and talent evaluation short-comings.
“Would you like to be in the Eagles locker room knowing that you’re completely expendable? That you’re always thrown to the wolves, it’s always your fault, your lack of execution?”
Bissinger suggested Kelly's 46-7 record at Oregon was vastly overrated because of the inferior competition and Oregon's inability to beat good teams.
“[Oregon] was good because he recruited a bunch of thugs from L.A. who couldn’t make it academically and many of whom got in trouble. He barely beat a top-20 team, he never won at the national championship, and every time he went against a good team, he lost.”
Somewhat surprisingly, Bissinger said Foles — the same player he said was too soft and white to win a Super Bowl — was better than Sam Bradford.
“When it’s third or something, do you want Sam Bradford as your quarterback?” Bissinger mockingly asked. “Honestly, Nick Foles looked a hell of a lot better.”
Bissinger followed that interview up by speaking to Mike Missanelli on 97.5 the Fanatic. He took his comments a step further, arguing that Kelly should be fired: “I think he should be fired after the season,” Bissinger said.
Bissinger later clarified that he would only fire Kelly at the end of the season if the team had a losing record, but also suggested that the NFL has figured Kelly out.
“I think it’s clear now the gimmick is over and coaches have figured it out,” Bissinger said.
This comes on the heels of NFL analyst Mark Schlereth saying NFL teams have caught up to the Eagles offense and that Kelly would be back coaching in college by next year.
