By the Numbers: Another honest effort yields only single point

The Philadelphia Flyers continue to play much better hockey, although another result slipped through their fingers. Two nights after seeing a lead slip away late, the Flyers couldn't find the back of the net and eventually succumbed in overtime to the San Jose Sharks, 1-0.

Forwards FW

As the chart shows, this might be the most consistent performance by the Flyers' lines all year. The fourth line struggled again, but every other line was on the positive side of shot attempts, with stretches of quality, controlling play.

As you would expect, the Giroux line drew the Sharks' top defensive pair, along with the Marleau line. They faded in and out of the game, but also had some good looks.

The Couturier line was probably the best on the night. Not only did they have the best possession numbers, but furthermore they were playing against the top line of Karlsson-Thornton-Pavelski.  Simmonds and Read just can't get the puck to go in this year.

Lastly, it was good to see a better effort from Bellemare's line. They had a really tough game last time out, and this was a big improvement.

Defense D

The numbers look pretty good for Manning-Gostisbehere, but truthfully they had soft duty. Low minutes, barely saw the Sharks' top-6 forwards at all, and lots of offensive zone faceoffs. Gostisbehere again looked pretty good on the power play, however.

The Flyers' top two pairs saw similar duties tonight in terms of matchups and ice time. It was generally a solid performance from all 4 players, and Luke Schenn had a few memorable moments with a big hit and a goal line kick save.
