Now they're starting to make it look easy. The Philadelphia Flyers were in control all the way in a 4-0 victory over the New York Islanders.
The Islanders are the team near the top of the division, but the Flyers looked like the better team right from the start, outshooting the Islanders, 11-2, in the first period. A cluster of penalties broke up the game in the second period, but a quick pair of goals by the Flyers game them a lead they never relinquished behind a Steve Mason shutout.
Game Flow
Forwards
While every line has nice numbers after such a solid team performance, the biggest story is the Sean Couturier line. Couturier himself had another goal and assist, bringing his totals up to 12 points over his last 10 games. Even better, it was the Couturier line that did the heavy lifting against the Islanders top line with John Tavares.
Matt Read continues to play well since his benching, leading the Flyers with a three-point night. One of those points came with his designated linemates, while the other two came with Couturier during line changes and during a 4v4 stretch. It's pretty unusual to see the fourth line with so many minutes, although all the penalties probably played into that. With goals in two games in a row and all the ice-time last night, it's unclear if Jordan Weal will get a chance to make his Flyers debut in the next game.
The top line with Claude Giroux had another pointless game, despite a pretty busy first period in terms of shot attempts. This line will likely stick together and wait for the goals to come as other lines carry the scoring during this nascent three-game winning streak.
Defense
Brandon Manning filled in for injured Shayne Gostisbehere, but didn't get Gostisbehere's usual ice time. Evgeny Medvedev's Corsi may have taken a hit from the change, but Medvedev nonetheless scored a nice goal during 4v4 play when playing with Michael Del Zotto.
Radko Gudas and Del Zotto played to their usual high standards, taking the tough match-ups and putting up good stats. The pair were a combined +5 yesterday with two assists.
Mark Streit and Nick Schultz had a decent game, riding the strong team performance to a positive Corsi. Streit was back on the top power play unit without Gostisbehere in the lineup, but the Flyers' power play continued to slump and went 0-for-5 on Saturday.
