Almost nothing goes according to plan this season for the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers seized the initiative in the second period and finally broke their scoreless streak with two goals on special teams from Schenn and Giroux.

Because nothing comes easy however, the Carolina Hurricanes pressed hard in the third period, and the Flyers gave little pushback. After the Flyers dodged a few bullets, the Hurricanes did tie the game and force overtime.

Fortunately Shayne Gostisbehere did what he does best. He blasted one top shelf only seconds into an overtime 4v3 power play, saving the Flyers' blushes for a 3-2 victory.

Forwards

It was another game where the Flyers didn't score 5v5, although they were able to get consistent performances up and down the lines. The Flyers' 18 shots and two goals in the second period set the stage for the win.

It was worrying the way the Flyers got pushed around in the third period. They appeared to be playing scared, and ultimately did cough up the lead.  The Hurricanes top line of Rask-E. Staal-Lindholm had a very good night. They got the better of the Couturier line, and devoured the Bellemare line with an approximate 90 percent Corsi.

The Giroux line did only marginally better against the Hurricanes checking line centered by J. Staal. Claude Giroux finished with a three point night nonetheless, thanks to special team goals. Brayden Schenn also continued to show some jump in his legs, but underwhelmed on a penalty shot opportunity.

Defense

D

The Flyers again relied on a top-4 heavy defense rotation. Manning-Gostisbehere was largely relegated to soft duty while the top two pairs split the heavy lifting. Del Zotto-Manning clearly led the way in the stats department.

Regarding the third pairing, Gostisbehere has been a huge boost to the team. It's not from his 5v5 work however, so the Medvedev watch will continue regarding Manning's place in the team. Manning's deployment on the penalty kill (where Medvedev has not been used) may be saving his place.
