By the Numbers: Rangers slip past Flyers
In another tight, fast-paced game, the Philadelphia Flyers fell just short of extending their winning streak to five games. This was essentially a four-point game against the New York Rangers for divisional and wild card standing, so although the Flyers can claim a point, that is cold comfort.
The Flyers got off to a good start, taking a 1-0 lead as Brayden Schenn slammed home a sneaky Sean Couturier feed. The Rangers bounced back with a power-play goal, and took the lead 2-1 in the second period.
The Flyers came back hard in the third period, finally tying the game on a power-play goal. The game eventually went to overtime where the Flyers had most of the possession, before slipping into a shootout. As is too often the case, the Flyers made a poor showing in the shootout allowing the Rangers to get two big points in the standings with a 3-2 win.
Game Flow
Forwards
First things first, the Couturier line played a strong game against the Rangers top line. They pulled ~60 percent Corsi against Rick Nash, Derek Stepan and Chris Kreider, as well as adding the first goal. Couturier continues to play with more offensive initiative and keeps the points coming.
The Claude Giroux line played an even better game, dominating the Rangers second line. They had bunches of chances and some dominant shifts (check out the game flow chart at the 45 minute mark), but their three-goal effort against Boston didn't change their luck. Giroux hit the post twice, before the same trio finally broke through on the power play to tie the game in the third.
The only Flyers line that didn't have very nice numbers was the Pierre-Edouard Bellemare line. The Rangers third line got the better of them, and this line was on the ice for the Rangers only even-strength goal of the game.
Defense
The Flyers honored Nick Schultz before the game for having reached 1,000 game played in the NHL, but Schultz played the fewest minutes as the chart above shows. His partner, Mark Streit, had one of his better statistical games of the season in terms of minutes and Corsi. The Streit-Schultz pair played against the Rangers second line, while Streit picked up extra shifts with other defensemen.
Michael Del Zotto and Radko Gudas played against the Rangers top line, keeping them off the scoreboard and maintaining a positive Corsi differential.
Shayne Gostisbehere and Evgeny Medvedev had a very busy game. They were on the ice together for both even strength goals of the game, while one of the duo was out for the special teams goals. Medvedev was directly involved in both Rangers goals, so he left himself room for improvement. Ghost was a prominent figure in the game, and he almost scored a beautiful goal after intercepting a pass in the neutral zone and bringing it in himself on the a breakaway. For all the ups and downs of the game, their bottom line was another high Corsi game.
