The Phillies offense took a while to get going tonight in San Francisco, but they would walk away with a 3-2 win.
The NL West leading San Francisco Giants came into tonights action having won 12 of their last 13 games. At the plate, the Giants led all of Major League Baseball in batting average with a .311 average for the past 10 days, and on the mound was their ace Madison Bumgarner, who had allowed two runs of less for 12 straight starts this year.
After being no hit through the first four innings, where they also gave up two runs off an error and a sacrifice fly, the Phillies Maikel Franco doubled in the fifth to record the teams first hit of the night. Later in the seventh, Tommy Joseph doubled to left field and was brought around by an Andres Blanco liner up the middle, cutting the Giants lead in half at 2-1. The next batter, Cameron Rupp, connected for a 2-run home run out to deep center field that sent Madison Bumgarner out of the game. Jeremy Hellickson would go six innings for the Phillies, striking out three and allowing five hits.
The Giants threatened big time in the bottom half go the eighth inning. After a leadoff single by Joe Panik, and a past ball that brought him to scoring position at second base, Buster Posey walked to put two men on with one out. Luckily, Tyler Goeddel was able to make a potentially game-saving grab in shallow left field after sliding to make the catch and doubling Joe Panik off second base.
In the ninth, Jeanmar Gomez made quick work of the Giants to record his 20th save of the season.
