The Eagles stormed out of the gate in the 2016 season, thanks in large part to some stellar play from rookie quarterback Carson Wentz.
But as the season progressed, Wentz started to experience the struggles that can come with a lack of experience at the NFL level, as the team's level of play also slipped, eventually resulting in another season with an early offseason. When evaluating his own performance from his rookie season, Wentz wasn't overly positive or negative.
"I thought it was OK," Wentz said. "It definitely wasn't where it needs to be. Ultimately we were 7-9, that's what it all boils down to. I thought I learned a lot. I thought I grew mentally and physically on the field. Definitely nowhere near where I want to be and where I think we can be as a team but I thought we did some good things at times too."
Wentz finished the season with a 62.4 percent completion rating, 3,782 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his rookie season. He also ran the ball 46 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
More than anything, the quarterback who spent his entire life with playoff experience and extending winning streaks is packing things up with the rest of his teammates on the day after the regular season concluded. This is new territory for Wentz, and the feeling was one he hopes to keep out of the Eagles future.
"Not a good one. Yeah, we won last night and that was cool but it was weird coming in this morning knowing we're not going to be back here," Wentz said. "That team, that locker room, is never going to be the same. It's kind of a crappy feeling. But we're going to use that now. I know I'm going to personally use it. I never want to have that feeling again. I want to be playing into January for the rest of my career God-willing."
Wentz highlighted the Eagles overall success at moving the football, but struggling in the red zone. The Eagles had a red zone efficiency of 49.09 percent, ranked 24th in the NFL.
"I think we can all get better. I think we all need to be better in situations," Wentz said. "I thought we were a really good football team between the 20s. I think we did some good things. But situationally, we all just need to be better, myself included."
While there is improvement needed in all areas, Wentz has shown a work ethic and determination that has the Eagles in good shape at the quarterback position. Adding some help around Wentz and continuing to work on the fine details that hurt the team this season should only help going forward as well.
