The deal is done.

After months of speculation and rumors of a deal worth $30 million per year, the Eagles and franchise quarterback Carson Wentz have agreed to a new deal that will keep the quarterback in Philadelphia through the 2024 season.

The extension is for four-years, $128 million, according to Adam Shefter of ESPN.

Wentz is set to make $32 million per year on the extension. He will be guaranteed $107 million and can hit escalators to reach a total value of $144 million.

While the deal is certainly not the least expensive quarterback contract on the market, it carries a lower AAV than Russel Wilson’s new deal and getting a deal done before Jared Goff and Dak Prescott signed their extensions raises their price tags and further restricts the salary caps for two NFC rivals.

The Eagles sent Cleveland two first-round picks, a second-round pick, a third-round pick and a fourth-round pick in order to acquire the second overall pick in the 2016 draft and the rights to draft Carson Wentz (or Jared Goff had the Rams selected Wentz with the first pick).

The picks the Eagles sent away ended up being offensive tackle Jack Conklin, cornerback Daryl Worley, quarterback Connor Cook, defensive end Tyquan Lewis and quarterback Deshaun Watson. Every single pick was traded away by the Browns.

Since joining the Eagles, Wentz has started 40 games for the team. The Birds are 23-17 during this time.

In his 40 starts, Wentz has posted a 63.7% completion rate, 10,152 passing yards and an interception to touchdown ratio of 70-28. He also has four game winning drives and was the leading candidate for the MVP award in 2017 prior to tearing his ACL. Wentz set the team in position to capture the first-round bye that bought the Eagles enough time to design an offense around Nick Foles and capture the team’s first Super Bowl Championship.

Naturally, there will be those who are concerned with Wentz’s recent performance and injuries, but Wentz struggled through an ACL tear he was not fully recovered from in 2018. He suffered a back fracture as a result of this much like suffering an ankle injury can force a player to compensate by putting more weight on his opposite leg and causing a knee injury.

Fans can expect a Wentz more like the 2017 version when he lead the league in total quarterback rating and touchdown percentage. This is especially so with two top-caliber running backs in Miles Sanders and Jordan Howard as well as a proven deep threat in DeSean Jackson and Andre Dillard providing improved depth on the offensive line.

Eagles teammates took to social media to congratulate the team leader on the extension.

Even some former teammates on other teams sent their congratulations, such as wide receiver Jordan Matthews.
