Carson Wentz To Return Sunday Against Colts

By Brandon Apter, Sports Talk Philly Staff

Sunday's Eagles loss to the Buccaneers was a tough one to swallow for numerous reasons. The day after a loss is normally a tough one for any NFL fan, but the sour taste in the mouths of Eagles fans may be gone sooner than usual after their loss. On Monday, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson announced that quarterback Carson Wentz will be back under center for Philadelphia's match-up against former offensive coordinator Frank Reich and the Indianapolis Colts.

"He's excited, he's ready," Pederson said via Philadelphieagles.com. "Our plan was in place, he understood it, he embraced that, and now he's ready."

This will be Wentz's first game action since he tore his ACL and LCL on December 10 against the Rams. Despite losing the MVP candidate late in the season, the Eagles powered forward en route to their first ever Super Bowl title. Prior to getting hurt, Wentz led the Eagles to an 11-2 record, completing 60.2 percent of his passes for 3,296 yards and 33 touchdowns. That's good for a passer rating of just under 102.

Although Wentz hasn't played in a game in nearly 10 months, Pederson isn't worried about Carson's preparation. That being said, Wentz will almost definitely be without three of the Eagles' four starting wide receivers. Alshon Jeffery is week-to-week, Mack Hollins is on injured reserve and Mike Wallace is expected to miss a chunk of time with an ankle injury.

"He's a guy that will be totally prepared. He comes in early, studies the tape," Pederson said. "He's going to be prepared mentally, now it's just about the physical part taking over."

Needless to say, Wentz is more than ready to get back on the field.

The Eagles host the Colts on Sunday, September 23 at 1:00 p.m. inside the confines of Lincoln Financial Field.

With Wentz returning, that spells the end of Nick Foles' run as the Eagles starter for now. Even though his start to the 2018-19 season wasn't ideal, the way he led the team to a Super Bowl win will forever live in the hearts and minds of Eagles fans.

"Nick has understood all along that this is Carson’s football team. We drafted Carson to be the guy. We owe a lot of gratitude to Nick Foles for what he has done, what he has done this season, and how he has led this football team."

Foles completed 35 of his 48 passes on Sunday for 334 yards and a touchdown.

“I’m grateful and blessed to have played this game as long as I have," Foles said following Sunday's loss. "Whatever the team needs of me, I’m going to do. I will help in anyway possible.”
