Charlie Manuel Officially Out as Phillies Manager

Chuck

"It's not easy for me personally. It's not easy for
this organization."

Those words, spoken by Ruben Amaro Jr. (followed by some
genuine tears) during today's press conference, expressed the feeling of just
about every person associated with this team. The emotional side of this move
with Charlie Manuel is undoubtedly tough, but it is a move that had to be made.

The conference itself revealed some interesting information
on the move. Ryne Sandberg is, as of now, considered the interim manager of the
team. No word was given on his status for next season, though the common
consensus seems to point at Sandberg managing next season in Philly as well.
Amaro also announced that both he and Manuel knew the move was coming prior to
Wednesday's game against the Atlanta Braves. None of the players were aware,
however. Finally, Amaro announced that Wally Joyner, the assistant hitting
coach, would keep that position, but also become the first base coach. Juan
Samuel would make the move from first to third base coach to fill Sandberg's
spot.

Ruben Amaro also mentioned the wish to keep Manuel in the
organization in a different position, but no announcement was made. Of course,
Charlie was asked some questions on his feelings during this process. He
promised to keep up with the players and team members, no matter where he goes
next. He will continue to watch the Phillies games and get mad at the TV. When
asked about knowing that Wednesday's game may be the last time he took off a
baseball uniform, Charlie confirmed that he loved wearing the Phillies red, and
would've worn it to the conference if he could.

But what was Charlie most angry about?

"I'm mad they took the best seat in the house away from
me."

While he understands the decision, Charlie was, of course,
not pleased with it. But, he willingly put the team ahead of himself. Manuel
did not resign and did not quit. He aided in making the move that was best for
the organization moving forward. Frankly, he was tired of having coffee every
morning this past week with Amaro to discuss the situation.

Philadelphia was the highlight of his career, Manuel
mentioned. He enjoyed every moment he had with the team and in this city,
through the ups and downs. As for the fans, Charlie merely asks that they
continue to come to the ballpark and support the organization.

Personally, I am deeply saddened by the move. Without a
doubt, I knew the move was coming at some point, but like so many others, I had
no idea the decision would come today. If I could have just a moment to speak
with Chuck, I'd thank him many times over. I'd thank him for giving me a team I
could enjoy watching for the better part of nine seasons. I'd thank him for
managing a team that I could watch with my family and friends. I'd thank him
for giving the fans a team they could boast about to other people. I'd thank
him for 5 straight National League Eastern Division Championships. And, I'd
thank him for leading the team into one of the greatest experiences of my life:
the 2008 World Series Championship.

Thank you, Charlie Manuel.
