On MLB Network Radio last week, Padres Manager Bud Black made an appearance on "Inside Pitch" as he often does. One of the questions asked by hosts Mike Ferrin and Jim Duquette had to do with his approach as a pitcher and what type of adjustments he made. A pitcher in the Major Leagues in 1995, one person helped give him good advice about pitching: then-Indians hitting coach Charlie Manuel. Manuel, it seems, offered Black a good perspective as someone who would be batting, and that perspective is what Black brings into his managing today. Today, Manuel is offering those skills to others.
On charliemanuelbaseball.com, any amateur hitter may sign up for a clinic in St. Petersburg, Florida. For $700.00, attendees will be treated to an all-star cast:
Headlined by Charlie Manuel himself, campers and parents will also have the opportunity to meet and learn from long-time Major Leaguers such as Jim Thome, Tom Gordon and many more to come! Teams and instruction will be coached and taught by current Division I, Division II, and NJCAA coaches. Guest appearances will be made by a current University of Maryland Head Coach John Szefc, long time professional scout Alan Marr, PLUS a variety of professional coaches and players are set for instruction and demonstrations.
Phillies.com reports that Pat Borders, David Segui, Rich Dubee and Pedro Feliz will also take part.
The clinic is primarily designed to help the amateur player develop skills. A number of colleges are reported to attend this clinic, but it appears that anyone may sign up for this weekend-long clinic. A weekend in sunny Florida in December sounds just fine to me. Click here to register.
