The Phillies have only played full squad games this Spring. Today is the only day that the Phillies will be splitting up to face two teams. The Phillies will host the Boston Red Sox at Bright House Field in Clearwater, while another contingent heads to Legends Field in Tampa to Face the New York Yankees.
Collectively, the Phillies starting lineup will play. Ben Revere, Cody Asche, Domonic Brown, and Darin Ruf head to Tampa. In Clearwater, the Phillies will play Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Carlos Ruiz, and Freddy Galvis. Utley will still not play second base; he will serve as the team's designated hitter.
At home, the Phillies will send to the hill Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. The Phillies are hoping to see something from Gonzalez this Spring and get something back on their investment. In his two games so far, Gonzalez has two losses and a 11.25 ERA. In four innings of work, opponents are hitting .450 against Gonzalez.
On the road, the Phillies will start Sean O'Sullivan. Instead of keeping O'Sullivan for the green jerseys on St. Patrick's Day on Tuesday, he will get to travel to Tampa to face the New York Yankees. O'Sullivan is a non-roster invitee who has some experience with the Phillies. O'Sullivan also has two appearances this Spring, pitching to a 9.82 ERA as opponents are batting .389 against him this Spring.
The Red Sox will start their top prospect Blake Swihart at catcher. The Red Sox insist that this is not a showcase of their young prospect as they face the Phillies. Reports have said that the Phillies insist on either Swihart or infielder/outfielder Mookie Betts in any Hamels deal. Swihart told Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald that it's simply his "turn to catch".
The Yankees will play their full lineup, sans Carlos Beltran. Chris Young will play right field in his place. That means the Phillies will get to face the embattled Alex Rodriguez, who will serve as designated hitter. Rodriguez has hit very well this Spring. In seven games, Rodriguez is batting .375 with a home run, double, two RBI and three walks.
