Chris Maragos Undergoes Another Successful Surgery, Retires From NFL
By Paul Bowman, Sports Talk Philly Editor
Chris Maragos made a name for himself in the NFL as part of the Legion of Boom in Seattle. Maybe that’s a bit misleading, since he was a backup, but he did come up with the name “The Aftershock” for the backups to the members of the Legion of Boom.
After his three-year stint as a member of the Seahawks and “The Aftershock”, Maragos departed via free agency to Philadelphia.
Maragos and fellow safety Malcolm Jenkins joined the team at the same time and the city was not impressed to say the least.
These two were not considered top talent and they, along with linebacker Bryan Brahman made up the free agent signings for the year. The public attention was more on the releases of players like Emmanuel Acho, Jason Avant, and, of course, DeSean Jackson.
But the free agent signings worked out exceedingly well.
Jenkins has been an Iron Man and played an incredible amount of snaps to help stabilize a secondary that was in shambles.
Bryan Brahman didn’t do much to stand out, but he returned for a second stint with the team in 2017 during the Eagles postseason run, contributing to the special teams play in Super Bowl LII.
Of course, Brahman, it could be argued, took the place of Chris Maragos, who was in his fourth season with the team and had served as the special teams captain prior to his injury.
It was a major loss for the Birds and his name went along with the storyline throughout the playoffs of a team missing their starting quarterback, starting left tackle, starting middle linebacker and their special teams captain.
What was not known at the time was the extent of Maragos’ injury.
While many thought Maragos would return in 2018, he spent the entirety of the season on the PUP list.
On December 18, 2018, Maragos announced via social media that he had had successful surgery regarding his injury.
Just a few months later, in February of 2019, the Eagles announced that they had parted ways with Maragos.
Maragos had recorded 29 tackles and one forced fumble (on defense) at the time of his release from the Eagles.
On Tuesday, Maragos announced via social media that he had once again had successful surgery.

While the hope is that Maragos will be healthy following this additional surgery, it is a bit hard to imagine that he plays in the NFL again.
Maragos will now a 32-year-old special teamer who hasn’t played football in two years.
While his playing days, may be over, there is still a chance he gets a shot with another team. He also has the leadership and knowledge that it would not be surprising to see him end up as a coach in the league at some point.
No matter what the future holds for him, Eagles fans will wish him the best as he continues his recovery.
Update: Maragos has officially announced his retirement from the NFL.
What an amazing ride, thankful for everyone who made it so great! pic.twitter.com/8X3icR3kGI
