According to Rob Maaddi, a sports writer for the Associated Press, Phillies broadcasters Chris Wheeler and Gary Matthews are out of the booth. Here is the statement from the Phillies in Maaddi's article:
''As the longest-tenured member of the Phillies broadcasting team, Chris Wheeler will return to his club roots after stepping down from his role as a Phillies broadcaster…"
''With 37 years of broadcasting experience, combined with his front office background where he began his Phillies career, 'Wheels' will take on a new role allowing the organization to continue to benefit from his knowledge, experience and dedication to the game…"
''Additionally, Gary Matthews will continue to work with the Phillies in roles that are yet to be determined.''
What will Wheels and Sarge do with the team moving forward? Will a familiar name be moving to the TV booth? Or, will a few outside hires be the choice? There is certainly more to come. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: Further confirmation from Ryan Lawrence and Matt Gelb.
Matt Gelb also announced that Comcast SportsNet made the decision after receiving some control of the team through their recent 25-year deal.
UPDATE 2: Chris Wheeler has made a statement regarding the situation (courtesy Todd Zolecki):
"It’s been an honor and a privilege to be a part of the Phillies broadcast team for 37 years. I certainly respect the decision that was made and I look forward to my new role in the Phillies organization."
In addition, Zolecki is reporting that Larry Andersen and Scott Franzke will remain in the radio booth. Comcast apparently wants just one TV commentator to replace Wheels and Sarge, also according to Zolecki.
UPDATE 3: A bit of controversy. Some reports have the Phillies firing Chris Wheeler (including Wheeler himself), while others say he stepped down. We'll have an answer soon, for sure.
