Throughout the Flyers playoff run, Claude Giroux ensured that his health was fine, nothing more than the bumps and bruises and wear and tear that come at that point of the season.
But it appears that Giroux's health was a problem in the playoffs.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Giroux will have hip/hernia surgery next week. The injury has not yet been confirmed by the team.
Giroux scored 22 goals and had 67 points in 78 games during the regular season. In the six-game series with the Capitals, Giroux was held to just one assist. As the season progressed, there was speculation that Giroux was hiding an injury even though he insisted it was nothing more than the usual wear that happens over the course of a season. Sources told CSN Philly's Tim Panaccio that the Flyers had been treating a nagging injury on Giroux all season, but that the surgery would help permanently fix the injury.
The Flyers have not released an official injury list during the offseason just yet. It was originally expected that GM Ron Hextall would announce the team's injuries entering the offseason at his season-ending press conference two weeks ago, shortly after the Flyers elimination from the playoffs.
Friedman also added that Giroux is expected to have recovered in time for the World Cup of Hockey, set to take place in September. The recovery would be up to approximately eight weeks. Giroux does not have a roster spot on Team Canada yet, but the finalized roster is going to be announced by June 1 and there is belief that Giroux is deserving of a spot.
