PHILADELPHIA — Despite holding a domineering 40-25 shots advantage over the Red Wings, two points didn't come easy for the Flyers on Wednesday.
Not only did they have to mount a rally to erase a two-goal deficit, they had to find a way to come back once the Red Wings reclaimed the lead in the third. Jakub Voracek found a way to put the Flyers over the hump though, netting the overtime winner at 1:41 of the extra period off a one-timer from Claude Giroux.
Chris VandeVelde's first goal of the season in the second period and Roman Lyubimov's first-career goal in the third stanza evened the score for the Flyers, but Henrik Zetterberg's one-timer from Tomas Tatar less than five minutes later put the Wings back on top.
If the Zetterberg goal wasn't enough of a deflation, Dale Weise's high-sticking minor with 4:58 to play seemed as if it would be their death blow. The Flyers killed that minor with relative ease, though, and rode that momentum to a furious late rally.
Mark Streit potted a loose puck past Petr Mrazek as the Flyers pulled Michal Neuvirth for an extra attacker, but the Red Wings objected. Citing interference on Mrazek, the goal stood, setting the stage for Voracek's heroics in the extra period.
The game had started off rather innocuously, but a pair of goals from Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou just 16 seconds apart late in the first stanza gave the Red Wings that two-goal lead that they defended for much of the rest of the contest.
Making his second-consecutive start for the Flyers, Neuvirth turned away 22 pucks. He didn't seem too rattled after the Wings' quick first-period tallies, and saw just 16 shots over the rest of the game.
Mrazek certainly did his part to earn points for the Red Wings, stopping 36 shots — including the Flyers' furious 17-shot second period, of which they beat the 24-year-old netminder just once. It didn't get any easier for him, as he faced 15 shots between the third period and overtime.
The Flyers next head to Brooklyn on Thursday, for their first matchup of the season against the New York Islanders.
