On a stormy morning in Clearwater when the Phillies might be rained out of not one but two Grapefruit League games today, the team got some bad news. According to Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News, starting pitcher Cole Hamels suffered a "setback" in his progress.
Quoting Lawrence:
"After throwing three bullpen sessions in his quest to join the Grapefruit League rotation in mid-March, Hamels suffered a setback on Saturday when he said his body felt fatigued after throwing off the mound."
Lawrence also reports that Hamels will not get an MRI; the setback is believed to be purely fatigue. Either way, the news is tough for the Phillies to take.
Hamels was originally expected to miss just a couple starts as the new season opens. The Phillies could have made up for that with off days. Now, the Phillies likely need to make other plans. David Buchanan has impressed thus far and could be a candidate to come North with the big club.
