Coming Off The Flu, Roy Halladay Set To Take On San Diego Padres

The flu took its toll on Roy Halladay this weekend.  Now, with two extra days rest to rebuild his strength, Halladay will take the mound against the San Diego Padres in South Philadelphia.

Halladay's last start came on Wednesday, September 4.  Watching the first inning, one would think that Halladay was barely going to make it out of the first or second inning.   In the first inning alone, Halladay allowed a hit and three walks.  Yet, thanks to a sacrifice fly and a ground ball double play, Halladay escaped allowing just one run in the first.  And that's all Halladay would allow in six innings of work.

The Phillies face Padres pitcher Tyson Ross.  Ross is typical of the Padres starting rotation this season: some bullpen appearances, some starts.   But Ross just hit the 100 inning mark during his last start.   He comes into the game with a 3-7 record and a 2.79 ERA.  He has started 12 games and pitched in 31 total.  Ross worked exclusively as a starter for the Oakland Athletics last year, spending about half the year in the major leagues.   Ross' last start was strong: seven innings, no runs, two walks, three hits.

Game Notes:

  • Weather could come into play tonight as a line of heavy thunderstorms is approaching Philadelphia as of the time this is written.  They could hit around the start of game time, before or after.
  • Freddy Galvis, who hit a home run in last night's Phillies win, will start in left field after getting action yesterday at second base.
  • Veteran Mark Kotsay, a member of the 1997 World Champion Florida Marlins, is still in Major League Baseball.  He will start in left field against the Phillies tonight.
