Coming off their first loss since Dec. 2, the Flyers were looking to rebound and avoid the start of a streak the other way. With the help of a first for one player and a career moment for another, they did just that.

Robert Hagg scored his first NHL goal and Sean Couturier scored the only goal of the third period for his career-high 16th goal in a single season to give the Flyers a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Center.

The Flyers opened the scoring in the first. A point shot off a face-off by Radko Gudas went wide and took a bounce off the back of the net. Dale Weise picked up the puck and tucked it in on a wraparound to make it 1-0.

But Detroit had an answer late in the period. On a power play, the Red Wings darted up the ice on a rush and scored on a nice shot by Martin Frk with 1.3 seconds left in the period to tie the game.

Detroit got another early opportunity on the man advantage in the second period as Jordan Weal sat for four minutes with a double-minor for high-sticking. The Flyers successfully killed off the first two minutes of the penalty, but couldn't keep Detroit off the board.

A point shot by Mike Green beat Brian Elliott to make it a 2-1 Detroit lead at 5:50 of the period.

The Flyers answered on their first power play chance of the game. Some nice passing set up the equalizer as Claude Giroux went cross-ice to Jake Voracek. Voracek put a pass down low for Wayne Simmonds who buried the chance from there for his 11th goal of the season.

The tied score at two apiece lasted for less than a minute. The Flyers got caught on a complete defensive zone breakdown and that allowed Gustav Nyquist to get in front of the net alone. He scored just 41 seconds after the Flyers power play goal to put Detroit in front again.

But again the Flyers had an answer. It was Hagg's first NHL goal that tied things up again. Hagg took a nice pass from Giroux and fired through a screen to beat Jimmy Howard and tie things up at three.

The Flyers controlled much of the third period, outshooting the Red Wings, 10-4, in the final 20 minutes. Only one of those shots found the net, and proved to be enough.

Another nice series of passes set up the goal, as Giroux found Simmonds with another cross-ice pass. Simmonds centered to Couturier, whose first shot was stopped by Howard, but the rebound was slammed home for his 16th goal of the season.

The Flyers held things down from there. It was a physical third period with few stoppages and the officials put the whistles away for most of the period.

With 2:06 to play, it appeared Detroit was going to the power play as Voracek was called for elbowing. But officials also sent Andreas Athanasiou to the box for embellishment, making it 4-on-4 for two minutes.

Elliott made 25 saves on 28 shots, picking up his seventh win in the last eight games for the Flyers. Howard stopped 27 of 31 shots in the loss.

Giroux had three assists in the game. Simmonds had a goal and an assist for a multi-point night.

The Flyers now hit the road for a pair of games, starting with Friday night in Buffalo against the Sabres at 7:30 p.m.
