For the second straight season, the Eagles trip to Dallas required overtime, even after the Eagles held a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter. This time, it ended in bitter defeat for the Eagles.
The Cowboys ran 12 plays in overtime, capped by Dak Prescott's five-yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten as the Cowboys erased the deficit to take a 29-23 win over the Eagles on Sunday night in Dallas.
Scoring Summary
1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | OT | T | |
Eagles | 3 | 10 | 7 | 3 | 0 | 23 |
Cowboys | 7 | 3 | 3 | 10 | 6 | 29 |
The Eagles forced an early punt and moved down the field on their first offensive drive into field goal range. Caleb Sturgis ended a 10-play, 50-yard drive with a 30-yard field goal to put the Eagles on the board first.
The Cowboys had a quick answer with a five-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. On the second play of the drive, Dak Prescott connected with Dez Bryant for a 53-yard gain. Three plays later, Prescott ran in from seven yards out to put the Cowboys on the board with a touchdown.
After a three-and-out by the Eagles, the Cowboys used an eight-play, 52-yard drive to tack on more points with a 38-yard field goal from Dan Bailey.
The two teams punted on their next possessions. When the Eagles got the ball back, they methodically moved up the field and capped a nine-play, 45-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Ryan Mathews.
The Cowboys were on the move again as the second quarter started to wind down when Prescott threw an interception to Jordan Hicks in the endzone. The Eagles managed to move 43 yards in 1:26 and connect on a 55-yard field goal from Sturgis as time expired on the half to take a three-point lead.
The Eagles second drive of the third quarter proved to be their best. A 12-play, 65-yard drive, run primarily in the no-huddle offense, ended with a five-yard touchdown pass from Carson Wentz to Jordan Matthews.
The two teams exchanged field goals on their next possessions. The Cowboys extended a drive with a 30-yard run by punter Chris Jones on a fake punt on 4th and 8 that led to a 23-yard field goal by Bailey. Sturgis connected from 34 yards when a drive stalled in the red zone.
After forcing the Cowboys to punt, the Eagles ran one play on their next possession. Wendell Smallwood, getting his first carry of the game, fumbled and Dallas recovered. The Cowboys ran three plays and had to settle for a 49-yard field goal by Bailey to cut the Eagles lead to seven.
The Eagles had a chance to add a field goal to the score, but opted to punt from the Cowboys 36. By punting, they gave the Cowboys the ball with 6:26 to play at their own 10.
The Cowboys then orchestrated a 90-yard drive that ended with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Prescott to Bryant one play after a near interception for the Eagles. With the extra point, the game was tied.
Both teams had the ball twice after the tying touchdown and could not pick up a first down, forcing overtime.
The Cowboys ran 12 plays in overtime, including one on 4th and 1, and sealed a comeback victory with a five-yard touchdown pass from Prescott to Jason Witten to seal the victory for the Cowboys.
