The Williamsport Crosscutters, the Phillies' Class A Short-Season team, were in for a double dose of baseball Tuesday evening against the Auburn Doubledays, affiliates of the Washington Nationals.
Since there were two games to be played, each game would be consisted of seven innings a-piece. Crosscutters' pitcher Ranger Suarez was the one who took the hill for the team in the first game of the doubleheader.
Suarez, 20, came up through the Phillies system as an international free agent from Venezuela. His career in the Venezuelan League started in 2012, as a 16-year-old pitcher. His stock rose in 2014 and 2015, with high quality starts and a low ERA. His ERA in 2015 as a member of the GCL Phillies was 0.65 in four starts and six games played.
Now a member of the Single-A ranks, Suarez took the hill for the Crosscutters coming in at 3-0 and a solid 2.09 ERA. For the doubleheader, Suarez knew he had seven innings to work with.
A solid game all-around, Suarez struck out five batters, and only walked one. His ability to get ground-outs(9) and fly-outs(4) proved to be the deciding factor in how he controlled the pace of the game.
While the Auburn pitching was solid in only allowing four runs on six hits, they couldn't do anything to get around the stellar pitching of Suarez and the solid fielding by the Crosscutters' defense.
Seven innings later, Suarez made history and threw a no-hitter for his team. Without a doubt, people will be hearing Ranger Suarez' name more often as the 20-year-old continues to rise up through the ranks.
