The Eagles made their intentions clear when it comes to Darren Sproles, after signing him to a two-year extension Friday.
Darren Sproles clearly isn't just a short-term solution for Chip Kelly's Philadelphia Eagles offense.
One day after trading a fifth-round draft choice to the New Orleans Saints for Sproles, the Eagles extended the 31-year old running back to a two-year deal running through the 2016 season.
It will certainly be intriguing to see how Sproles is used in Kelly's high octane offense this season, after the team re-signed both Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper before free agency opened to pair with the likes of DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy, giving quarterback Nick Foles a wealth of speedy options.
"It could get real crazy," Sproles told the Philadelphia media Friday. ""I just like to be in open space."
With all of those speedsters on the field, Sproles should find plenty of space to operate.
The Eagles clearly have made a commitment to Sproles, which could provide flexibility to move a player such as Jackson in a trade, or provide yet another piece of Kelly's puzzle that would keep defensive coordinators awake at night in advance of lining up against the Eagles.
“I think it’ll be fun,” Sproles said. “For me, watching [Kelly] last year from a distance, they do a lot of good stuff, [create] a lot of space. So I like that.”
Prior to signing this extension, Sproles had one year remaining on his deal that pays him $3.5 million this season.
