PHILADELPHIA— The Phillies (43-51) went into Tuesday night's game with a chip on their shoulder after back-to-back lackluster offensive showings against two lights-out pitchers.

Monday's game had the Phillies lose a close game in extra innings to the Marlins, who won their  50th game of the season last night.

Nonetheless, there was still baseball to be played, and the Phillies sent their star pitcher, Vince Velasquez to the mound to try to take a game back from Miami.

Philadelphia tried to get back on track Tuesday night after losing three of their last four games after the All-Star Break.

With only four hits to show for in the first seven innings of the game, it looked as if the Phillies would not be able to get anything going offensively for the third straight game.

Velasquez pitched seven strong innings for the Phils, however, and only allowed hits to three Marlins batters.

After another extra-inning appearance for the second night in a row, the Phillies dropped the game, 2-1, their third loss in four games. The Phils will look to avoid the sweep Wednesday night against Miami, and avoid a four game losing skid.

A game that started slow offensively, for the second straight night, only actually got going in the top of the fourth inning. Miami's left-fielder, Christian Yelich finally figured out Velasquez and delivered a sol0-shot to center field, his eighth of the year,  to give the Marlins an early 1-0 lead.

The Phillies didn't hesitate in the bottom of the inning, as they decided it was time to tie the game up, as first baseman Tommy Joseph hit a solo-home run of his own, his 13th of the year, to tie the game up, 1-1.

The game stayed tied all the way until the game went into extra innings. In the top of the 10th inning, Christian Yelich once again got the runner across for the Marlins, a single that scored Adeiny Hechavarria, and gave the Fish a crucial 2-1 advantage.

The tenth inning once again was a no-show for the Phillies offense, as they went down one-two-three against Marlins closer A.J. Ramos. Their five hits on the night was the 23rd time the Phillies mustered at least that number this season.

The Marlins win it in extra innings, 2-1.
