The Flyers had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but Detroit battled back. Goals by Tomas Tatar and Andreas Athanasiou tied the game in regulation. Jimmy Howard stopped all three Flyers shooters before Athanasiou beat Steve Mason to give Detroit a 3-2 shoot out win in Philadelphia on tuesday night.
Claude Giroux opened the scoring at 6:28 with his fourth of the season on the power play. Giroux slammed home a pass from Jakub Voracek to make it 1-0 Philadelphia. Shayne Gostisbehere picked up the other assist.
Detroit tied up just two minutes later when Tomas Tatar potted his second of the season. Tatar put home a pass from Henrik Zetterberg at 8:42 of the opening period.
Detroit outshot the Flyers 9-6 in the period and the teams went to the locker room tied at one.
The Red Wings would open the second period with 1:45 of carry over power play time. The Red Wings were unable to capitalize with the extra man.
Detroit would get anothe rpower play midway through the period and once again the Flyers penalty killers did the job.
Philadelphia got a late power play of their own. They were unable to score before the end of the period but had roughly 20 seconds of power play time to start the third.
Detroit once again outshot the Flyers in the period but neither team scored and the game was still tied 1-1 after two periods.
Sean Couturier put the Flyers ahead with his fourth of season at 6:51 of the third. Couturier slammed a rebound home off a Voracek shot. Mark Streit picked up the second assist.
Detroit tied it up five minutes later when Andreas Athanasiou beat Mason for his fourth of the season at 11:11. Dekeyser and Mike Green picked up the helpers.
The teams were not able to score after that and the teams would head to overtime.
In the overtime, neither team was able to score despite a few good chances and the game went to a shoot out.
In the shoot out, Jimmy Howard stopped all three Flyers shooters and Athanasiou beat Mason on the third shot to give Detroit the 3-2 win.
